Dolianova - Cattedrale di San Pantaleo

A diocese of Dolia (the ancient name of Dolianova) existed from 1089 until 1503, when it was merged into the archdiocese of Cagliari. The "Cattedrale di San Pantaleo", the bishop's seat of the former diocese, was erected within the 12th and the 13th century. It got consecrated in 1289. The church was built in Pisan-Romanesque style. The workshops, that decorated the façade and the outer walls had a significantly different style, than the artists, that worked inside the building. I have no idea, what the artist depicted here. The previous upload had the left side of the capital. The two hugging gentlemen are now on the left corner. Then there is a (very) long dragon or lion (?) and two typical lion heads. All display bared teeth.

I have no clue, what is depicted here. A master of the beasts (a second one to the left)? or are these human heads with long teeth? Actually the smaller right head has no teeth and does not look frightening. Is there a flower-basket? A small person under arches? Two hugging gentlemen on the right corner? As this is very enigmatic, I´ll upload the second, connecting side of the capital next.

Here is the Nativity scene, carved within the 13th century. Around the same time Nicola Pisano started to create the Nativity scene for the pulpit of the Baptistery in Pisa.

These lions may have once flanked the central portal. Meanwhile placed inside they guard the baptismal font, that is actually about 500 years older than the church.

As soft, local sandstones were used, most carvings are very weathered. The artists did not create very elaborate carvings, but they were very imaginative. For a while I saw a "Luxuria" here, but the lady (?) seems to dance with the snakes.

Here is a musician playing a dolio. Somebody has carved letters into the wall left to the corbel, probably during the restauration, when a scaffolding covered this wall and the vandal could reach this place.
