Klütz - St. Marien

|
The town of Klütz is, like the neighbouring communities, mentioned in the Ratzeburg tithe register as early as 1230.
St. Marien is typical for the area in terms of the building structure, but it is significantly larger than the other country churches in the villages. It is a brick Gothic church from the period of transition from Romanesque to Gothic. Construction began around 1250 with the rectangular choir, which is still clearly Romanesque. Then around 1280/1290 was the large three-nave, three-bayed hall was added.
The left baptismal font, dated to the 13th century, got replaced tby the Baroque font from 1653. The older one was used on the graveyard and got rediscovered.

Within the 15th century, the square tower (56m high!) was erected to the west.

The early Gothic brick church on a cruciform ground plan was first mentioned in 1230. The square tower today has a flat ceiling and is covered with an octagonal wooden shingle helmet twisted in on itself. In 1901 some 13th century frescoes were rediscovered here, but - the church was locked.

The parish of Kalkhorst is mentioned in 1230 in a list of villages belonging to the Ratzeburg diocese At the same time the village church of Kalkhorst was built. It was erected by the lords of the village.
The church of today stands out because of the irregularity of its ground plan and the many additions and alterations. The square tower stands asymmetrically in front.
The choir is dated to around 1350 based on an epitaph and replaced a previous building. The nave is attributed to the 13th century, so it is the older part of the building. The baroque furnishings from the beginning of the 18th century.
The late gothic fresco of the choir. The mouth of hell.

The rich, noble estate owners had their own richly decorated galleries, while their workers and servants had to sit below them.

Friedrich Schliemann, uncle of Heinrich Schliemann, the excavator of Hisarlik, now presumed to be the site of Troy, was pastor here.

Dassow - St. Nikolai

|
A settlement, conveniently located on the road from Lübeck to Wismar, existed here in the 12th century.
After a lengthy conflict, the Bishop of Ratzeburg waived his share of the bridge toll of the Dassow Bridge over the Stepenitz to the Lübeckers in 1219.
The early Gothic Nikolai Church was built from granite ashlar in the second half of the 13th century. The church was severely damaged by fire in 1632 and was rebuilt from 1633 on.
It looks like old tombstones (?) were used in the repair.
The church was locked, so I could not see the granite baptismal font from the 13th century.

Schönberg - St. Laurentius

Schönberg was first mentioned in a document in 1219 as Sconenberge. It was the residence of the bishops of Ratzeburg at the beginning of the 14th century.
There was already a church here in 1235. This was extended after 1324. The massive west tower was added in the early 16th century. In 1601, the church burned down due to a major fire and subsequently received a new decoration. In 1831 the tower received its present shape. A restoration of the church took place from 1987 to 1991, during which parts of the painting of the early 17th century could be uncovered.
Since the church was closed, I could not see these frescoes, nor the still existing bronze baptismal font, which was cast in 1357 by Gerhard Kranemann.
