It is believed that trade contacts with the Phoenicians existed from the late 10th century, and it is even assumed that Tartessos was located at this site. In addition to objects made of silver, copper, iron, ivory and stone, many thousands of fragments of clay vessels were found during excavations from around 900 to 770 B.C. in 1998. Huelva was probably an early Phoenician emporium and it was flourishing under the Carthaginians and Romans, who began to mine ore deposits. Under the Visigoths and Arabs, from whom the city was reconquered by Alfonso X the Wise in 1257, the city came to a standstill.
In 1880 it still only had 13,000 inhabitants, then it grew fast. It owes its boom to the mineral deposits on the Rio Tinto (Minas de Riotinto), as from the last quarter of the 19th century, the town became a small British colony. The reason for this was the permission granted by the Spanish government in 1873 for the mines of Riotinto to be commercially developed and utilised by the Rio Tinto Company Limited. As a result, the town and its infrastructure began to grow and the sleepy little village became a modern industrial town of the 19th century and an elegant town in the first centuries of the 20th-
The British also brought football to Spain, which led to the founding of the first football club in Spain - Recreativo Huelva - in 1889.

Madrid is the capital and most populous city of Spain. The city has almost 3.4 million inhabitants and a metropolitan area population of approximately 6.7 million. Madrid is part of the historical landscape of Castile and is located in the middle of the Meseta, the plateau of Castile.
The site of modern-day Madrid has been occupied since prehistoric times. The first document about the existence of an established settlement in Madrid dates from the Muslim age. In the second half of the 9th century Umayyad Emir Muhammad I built a fortress here. After the disintegration of the Caliphate of Córdoba in the early 11th century, Madrid was integrated into the Taifa of Toledo. In 1083, Madrid was conquered by the Kingdom of Castile. In 1309, under Fernando IV, the Assembly of Estates (Cortes) of the Kingdom of Castile was convened for the first time in Madrid.
In 1561, Philip II moved the royal court from Valladolid to Madrid. It became the de facto capital of Spain, which it remains to this day. In 1701 the War of the Spanish Succession broke out, which led to the Anglo-Portuguese occupation of the city in 1706. It ended in 1714 with the Bourbons taking over the Spanish throne. Today's royal palace was built under their rule. Particularly during the reign of Charles III, who is therefore popularly referred to as the “best mayor of Madrid”, the city's public infrastructure was modernized and numerous public buildings were built.
They do not only offer the young artists colors and brushes but workshops as well.

Legends tell, that in the 6th century a hermit named Porcianus, later known as Saint Pourcain founded a monastery on the height of land overlooking the river. The monastery was restored between 871 and 875 by monks of the Benedictine abbey of Saint-Philibert, (today in Loire-Atlantique), who had fled the Noirmoutier Abbey traying to bring St. Philiberts relics into safety from the the Norman raids.
They stayed for a couple of years and settled finally in Tournus. The monastery of Saint-Pourçain became a priory dependent on the abbey of Saint-Philibert de Tournus.
During the French Revolution, the monastery was closed and its church "Sainte Croix" became a parish church.
I had noticed the decline of many stores here several years ago. More and more businesses were given up. The situation obviously did not improve since a Lidl store opened

With a population of less than 700, the old infrastructure of shops is dying. The individual mobility and the discount shops in the larger communities around just let them starve.
Cologne - Zolling

Cologne is the fourth-largest city in Germany - and one of the oldest. A Germanic tribe, the Ubii, had a settlement here, this was named by the Romans "Oppidum Ubiorum". In 50 AD, the Romans founded "Colonia Claudia Ara Agrippinensium", the city then became the provincial capital of "Germania Inferior".
Two fotos of a small shop located in the Altenburger Strasse.
Good shoes, even custom made ones, have been offered here over decades. I had bought Birkenstock-sandals here. Then I read - written on the shop window - that "60 Jahre sind genug!" ("60 years are enough!") - and the closout sale started. Mrs. Zolling finally retired.

Many businesses in Gurk depend on tourism. It seems, that this year,
the tourists did not come in sufficient numbers. The shop is closed.
Fabrezan - Alimentation

|
Fabrezan lost about half of its population within a century. Today about 1200 people live here, not enough to keep this little shop going.
New supermarkets like Aldi and Lidl attract more and more customers - and so there is no future for small businesses and shops like this. - Fermeture définitive..

Montmarault - Cremerie

The rural exodus, that started in the hamlets and villages, has reached the small towns. With a population of about 1500, more populous towns with supermarkets like Aldi and Lidl only 20-30 kms around, there is no future for small businesses like these shops in Montmarault. The main road is lined by empty shops.

This shop offers the widest variety of brushes in Cahors. There are yard brushes, hand brushes, shoe-polish brushes, lavatory brushes, bottle brushes, clothes brushes. You name it - they got it! Of course there are as well all kind of brooms
and - not to forget - carpet beaters in different sizes...
