Napoli - Mount Veusius

Napoli is the regional capital of Campania and the third-largest city in Italy. Its metropolitan area has a population of more than 3 million. Founded by Greek settlers before 900 BC, Napoli was an important part of Magna Graecia and played a major role in the merging of Greek and Roman society. Following the decline of the Western Roman Empire Napoli was shortly ruled by the Ostrogoths. Byzantine troops captured the city in 536m but after the Byzantine exarchate, Ravenna fell a Duchy of Naples was created. Over centuries the Duchy´s relations to Rome or Byzanz were hard-fought. In 836 Napoli could repel a siege of Lombard troops with the help of the Saracens, which did not prevent Muhammad I Abu 'l-Abbas in the 850s loot Napoli. In the 11th century, the Duchy hired Norman mercenaries, and in about 1140 it came under Norman control under Roger II, then King of Sicily. In 1228 Emperor Frederick II founded the first university in Europe here, making Napoli the intellectual center of the kingdom. The conflict between the House of Hohenstaufen and the Papacy led in 1266 to Pope Innocent IV crowning the Angevin duke Charles I King of Sicily. Charles officially moved the capital from Palermo to Napoli. In 1282 after the "Sicilian Vespers", a successful rebellion on the island of Sicily against the rule of King Charles I, the Kingdom of Sicily was divided into two. The Angevin Kingdom of Naples included the southern part of the Italian peninsula, while the island of Sicily became the Aragonese Kingdom of Sicily. By the 17th century, Naples had become Europe's second-largest city – second only to Paris – with around 250000 inhabitants. Mount Vesuvius - less than 20km from Naples

Nola is a town with a population of about 35.000, located on the foothills of Mount Vesuvius. In the early 5th century, Paulinus von Nola worked in the city, which has been a bishopric since the 2nd century. In 410 Nola was devastated by the Goths under Alaric I. In 455 the Vandal king Genseric had it completely destroyed and its residents sold into captivity. Further looting and destruction were followed in 594 by Lombards, in 860 by Saracens, and in 934 by Hungarians. After the conquest by the Staufer Manfred in 1254, it was annexed to the Kingdom of Sicily. Here, Singer offers much more than just sewing machines

There was probably a palaeochristian church on the site, founded around the tomb of Saint Felix of Nola, a martyred bishop of the region. It was reconstructed in a Gothic style in the 1370s. The crypt has traces of the older building. It was rebuilt over the centuries, particularly in 1861 after a serious fire; when it was reconstructed in a Neoclassical style

Pompeii, a thriving Roman city of 8,000 to 10,000 people, was hit by an earthquake in 62, causing extensive damage. However, the city recovered, but the earthquake may have been caused by the sagging of a hearth roof clod that had come loose on the volcano's vent plug. In the fall of 79 large amounts of pumice and ash were thrown out. Some residents left the city for fear of an eruption from the volcano. Vesuvius erupted at the end of November. The eruption ejected large amounts of ash, lava and gases into the atmosphere. This cloud was carried by the wind across the land to Pompeii. Shortly after the eruption began, pumice began to rain. Pompeii was buried under a layer of volcanic ash and pumice up to 25 meters thick for over 1500 years. Pompeii has been systematically excavated since about 1750. About two thirds of the city have now been uncovered But there is a modern Pompei as well. In 1925 Giuseppe and his brother Sebastiano Mancusi opened a shop for the resale of sewing threads, needles, ribbons, rubber bands, buttons and everything that is needed for sewing. After a few years, Sebastiano and Giuseppe separated and dissolved the company. The first dedicated himself to selling clothes, while the second continued selling haberdashery together with his sister Carolina. In 1970, the brothers Rosario and Carla Mancusi, Giuseppe's children, decided to reopen the shop. And for a strange twist of fate, they open their doors right on Via Lepanto, where it all began in the 1920s.

In 1875, he obtained a painting of Our Lady of the Rosary from a convent in Naples and raised funds to restore the image. Miracles began to be reported and pilgrims began flocking to the church. Bartolo Longo was encouraged by the Bishop of Nola, to begin the construction of a larger church—the cornerstone being laid in 1876. The church was consecrated in 1891. It was expanded significantly in the 1930s and now holds 6,000 people.
