Beastly doodle

Just a late night doodle on the back of a watercolor destined for the wood stove as fire starter.
Marker and crayon on 11 by 14 inch cold pressed watercolor paper.

無字

The kanji 無字, could be translated as 'no word'. It was used in reply to a zen Buddhist koan that was a shaggy dog story. ;-)

Pure abstract artist I'm not. It seems as soon as I lay down a line some form or other starts to emerge. Here, for example, I wanted to play with Crayola's "extreme colors" crayons, -just scribble some patterns to see how the colors blend. Alas, with the first line this young lady doing her hair started to form. Oh well....

Walked down to my son's for dinner last night. He'd invited his office staff & friends. Here they've just finished Barbecue ribs, chicken, corn on the cob, salad, potatoes, etc., and have moved from the table to around the kitchen sink to debate if there's room for dessert. There wasn't.
Done with Sakura's Pigma's, archival ink, brush and Caran D'Arche Neocolor II water soluble crayons in a 5" X 8" sketch journal.

No deep meaning, no obscure social content, not a major opus, -just a few scratchings.

Busy day. I just finished ordering a N'Orleans St's jersey for a friend to take back to Japan for her son and... am taking my guests out to dinner and a play a bit later.
I needed a little relaxation, hence these two sketches.

For some reason this pose made me think of carnival.

Playing with my crayons

Last Christmas I bought washable crayons, color markers and roller markers so the 3 to 7 year old kids at my Christmas party could draw on the wall (the wall I covered with news print paper).
Well... going through the Christmas stuff this year I found the box of crayons, etc. and decided I wanna play with them! Hence this result.

EDM Challenge #229, Draw a summer Joy
27 Jun 2009 |
|
OK, what could be more of a summer joy than a cold beer on a hot day, especially if it's a porter that you brewed yourself?
Quickly and poorly drawn on cheap, too heavily sized, 9"X12" watercolor paper in pencil, water soluble crayon and watercolor paint.
Hey, I could'a taken more time with it but I've lawn to mow and beer to bottle!

I'd just finished reading an article in American Artist's 'Drawing' about Fred Hatt, a NYC artist. He works mainly, with d'Arche's aquarlle crayons on a gray or black ground.
Off and on I've tried the water soluble crayons but I could never get them to do quite what I wanted.
Well, after looking at Fred's work I tried once more and this is the result.
Not in his style but many thanks to him for the inspiration!

Feelin' my age

I threw my back out two days ago (parenthetical aside: 'Threw my back out' is a well established medical and scientific term meaning, I don't know how I did it nor where it happened but OUCH!) and feel like I fought the good fight and lost abysmally.
So! Yesterday I played with my crayons.
