Towards the light. Pennsylvania Penitentiary, Philadelphia. The Eastern State Penitentiary opened in 1829 and closed in 1971. The prison is now a ruin, open for visits. When it opened the prisoners were held in solitary confinement 23 hours a day. Silence was absolute, the guards even wore special soft shoes to prevent making noise as they patrolled.
