A blue hibiscus. New to the garden, it's supposed to be hardy, so fingers crossed it can make it through the winter.

Tradescantia is a a native plant to Eastern North America (although these are garden varieties). The flowers are open in the morning but close in sunlight. The name comes from two English botanists, John Tradescant the Elder (c. 1570s – 1638) and John Tradescant the Younger (1608–1662), who were gardeners to King Charles 1st (from Wiki). They are very reliable and basically look after themselves, so great for a lazy gardener.

A blue jay ( geai bleu ) waiting for peanuts in the garden. They turn up in autumn and spring and compete with the squirrels for the peanuts we put out. They are remarkably alert. I saw one fly from a tree about a hundred yards away the moment we put out the nuts. Once one bird finds the treats they call loudly to attract all the other jays in the neighbourhood. The squirrels don't have a chance- if you snooze you loose.

An Eastern Bluebird. This is the first time I have seen one of these. It is female, and so less brightly coloured than the male would be.

Tradescantia or spiderwort. In the summer the flowers close around noon, but later in the year, or whenever the sun is less intense, they stay open all day. (The Tradescantia family of flowers is named after John Tradescant, the keeper of Gardens, Vines and Silkworms for king Charles I - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Tradescant_the_Elder) .

Skullcaps (Scutellaria) growing close to a lake. These are small wildflowers (flower about 1.5cm) that habitually grow near water. The small swelling on the upper surface is supposed to resemble a skullcap, although to me it looks more like the dome on the head of a dolphin.
