This section of the sunken gardens on Douglas Promenade id dedicated to various memorials, the big slab to the left is the "Lifeboat Memorial" to Sir William Hillary and his volunteers. [I have a more detailed view of it - see here www.ipernity.com/doc/312383/50792332/in/album/1287942 including the text of the dedication] There are several others, the two "poppy" benches by the lifeboat slab and the outline figures in the circular bed are on the subject of "Lest we Forget ..."

IoM[2] - Benches on Douglas Head

Picnic area with a splendid view of Douglas Bay and Onchan Head. The statue of Sir William Hillary [founder of what is now the RNLI] overlooks the harbour entrance, the ferry terminal and the Tower of Refuge on Conistor Isle. The area hosts more than just the four picnic table/bench sets in this image. It isn't always this peaceful as this late afternoon view might suggest.

Constructed in 1832 at the instigation of Sir William Hillary (largely paid for by him, & with substantial public subscriptions), partially as a consequence of the wreck of the steam packet RMS St George in 1830 on the reefs around Conister Rock [Kione y sker]. As viewed from the Loch Promenade, Douglas en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tower_of_Refuge ... has many more details.
