NSR Hist - miners train to chatterley

03 Sep 2020 6 187
Workmen travelled using these older carriages, as they were "cascaded" from mainline onto more secondary and then local services, eventually ending their days in "paddy trains". Some would then be scrapped but others would receive a coat of green paint before being sold off as holiday chalets, store sheds and the like. One suggestion is that this image was taken on the Cheddleton Hospital Branch. The carriage on the extreme left is a passenger brake, of the type the Knotty Coach Trust were planning to replicate, until the remains at Rudyard Lake were identified. Not my image; and with a date about 1900, out of copyright.

NSR23 - brake testing

Gently shunting "23" around at Blythe Bridge, partly for brake and clearance tests. (the double "luggage" doors will be re-hung in a day or two).

NSR23 - interior planks & external panels

30 Dec 2020 124
Dry fitting the softwood planks that make up the interior at the outer end of the passenger section. Once removed these will be filled, knotted and primed, with the final finish will be medium oak scumble, protected by non-yellowing varnish. Progress is being made on fitting the exterior panelling (primed and grain-filled).

NSR23 - handrail test

30 Dec 2020 151
Holding up one of the long handrails, to test the fit, which needed quite some strength from that angle. Not that you can see who it is, but that's our apprentice, Connor. Our blacksmith was working from a combination of our dimensions and drawings, plus some very grainy old images (and one good one).

NSR Hist - Stoke Carriage Works

27 Dec 2018 4 303
Painters and trimmers pose for the camera. Carr 284 on the left must be being cleaned before entering service - it looks complete, including the whitewall tyres. Carr 271 on the right is being trimmed, and needs more coats of paint. The unknown vehicle at the rear, is a passenger brake, similar to NSR23 (as replicated by SRR for the Knotty Coach Trust). Total number of vehicles in the shop is not clear, but could be as many as eight. (not my image, scanned from a book, during research for the work SRR did on NSR23, specifically the footsteps and handrails)

NSR - hist - Prestbury

10 Feb 2018 1 285
NSR24, a 4-Wheel brake at Prestbury. This version doesn't have end windows as the ducket is at the end (the other side of the guard's door compared to "23"). Note the extra height above the windows and the 127 style waist panels. Also the livery on the top of the ducket. All-in-all a very interesting image, part of the historical background research done for the ABC project. Source : NSRRSRT

NSR - hist - brake third at Wheelock & Sandbach

NSR 4Wheel Brake 3rd, seen at Wheelock and Sandbach station (opened 1893 & closed 1930). . Part of the historical research to support the design of the ABC. . Source: to be confirmed.

NSR23 - ABC - Ducket at Rudyard

This is the "ducket" or guard's lookout from the remains of an NSR passenger brake. These brakes were thought to be extinct ... As this is a solid lump of teak, it will be a prominent part of the restored vehicle.

Scan of a postcard showing a 4W NSR brake 3rd at Harecastle, date is c1905. (Harecastle has had various names, but since 1944 it has been known as Kidsgrove) . Part of the historical research into the design of NSR passenger brake carriages. . Source: Lens of Sutton postcard
