Various planks being painted {3 of 3}. The red is the outside face for the body planks, the cream is the inside face of the roof planks [most of which are original] and the black is the underside of the floor. [normally the underside of floor planks are not painted, but modern plantation timber needs the additional protection] In the background, the van's body structural framework is now in undercoat.

This grain pattern, or a variation of it, is remarkably common in softwood planks. With a little imagination, it is possible to see some resemblance to an ostrich or similar bird.
