WR[HI] - ON594 and wrecked Rohilla

29 May 2023 50
Getting ready to re-launch the "William Riley" for another attempt to rescue the crew of the hospital ship "Rohilla" off the beach near to Saltwick Nab. Whitby. Ultimately, these attempts were all unsuccessful. Eventually, the "Henry Vernon" [Tynemouth's motor lifeboat, with a militia crew] arrived and was able to close the wreck and perform the rescue. Last person off was the Rohilla's Captain, carrying the ship's cat under his coat. . Not my image [in the public domain]

Very small image of the prom at St Bees getting a pasting from storm waves [high tide ?] and I suspect the walkway is going to be covered in pebbles and seaweed thrown up from the beach. Taken from the steps outside the "Beach Cafe / Shop" - St Bees is in western Cumbria, a little way South of Whitehaven undated, possibly late Nov or early Dec 2023. not my image [very small] : fair use & public information

wst / whn - waves over Whitehaven

07 Jan 2024 75
Huge waves over the pier and lighthouse during a storm [undated, guessing anywhere between 2015 and early 2023 - although the weathered appearance of the lighthouse indicates pre-2022] I suspect this might be Storm Desmond - 3rd to 8th December 2015 - which was quite vicious / devastating to most of Cumbria, which lost a lot of bridges and a Police Officer was killed when a bridge in Workington collapsed under him, as a result of the excessive rainfall. . not my image & only a small one : fair use & public education

wst - ohl power pole snapped [Storm Arwen]

01 Feb 2022 1 68
Overhead Line damage. On one route over 100 poles were snapped or otherwise damaged enough to require replacement [which involved using the helicopter]. The snow didn't help. Storm Arwen was over 25-27th November 2021. [the strongest gust was 110 mph [96 knots ; 177 km/h in Settle, North Yorkshire] Much of the damage was because the winds were strong northerlies, an unusual direction for the UK, Westerlies are far more common. . . . wst - The Sike flooded

10 Nov 2020 95
Further heavy rain on 20th February 2020, after Storms Ciara & Dennis earlier in the month, the ground was easily saturated and watercourses ran very full. The water retention ponds on Slatey Sike are overfull. [image zoomed in to show the situation] The image is very grey as heavy rain was falling from dense and low cloud.

Lightning.map ... Screenshot 2020-08-12 at 16.10.07, not a "named" storm, but a fairly intense thunderstorm covering large parts of NW Wales. I have friends in that area and my late father also lived there. Not my image - screenshot from a programme recording lightning strikes. Posted for fair use & educational purposes.

I live in the Northern part of the UK - approx where the storm divides into two, after tracking up from SE Wales over the past few hours - it was very stormy for some time.

PQR - Breakwater in a storm

09 Oct 2019 5 291
South Breakwater Titan crane, probably turned to minimise wind forces. There is a stack of concrete construction blocks awaiting transfer to the North Breakwater. Waves are breaking over the full height of the south breakwater, the lighthouse at the pier end can be made out. In the distance, the Titan crane on the North Breakwater, which is still under construction, can be seen, also turned to cope with the wind and waves that are breaking over the pier. B&W image from around 1930. (used for research into Peterhead harbour's history)

screen grab - that was some thunderstorm in progress. I live just under the eastern edge of the storm front in this image, which was moving - roughly - towards the North and East. For more than the next hour there were a lot of flashes and rumbles, as this died away, it was followed by a downpour.
