There certainly was an explanation - the hole had become a nest chamber for a leaf-cutter bee. After waiting what seemed a very long time, she came back with another peice of leaf ...

and disppearing into the next hole in the piece of timber, with the next peice of leaf - she may lay an egg in there, before fetching another peice of leaf to seal the egg into a cell of it's own. The process may be repeated several times if the hole is big enough.

We spotted that this packing timber had suddenly sprouted leaves, there had to be an explanation ... and already having seen a leaf section flying along with a bee attached ... (which proved impossible to capture on film, although several attempts were made)
