NER1173 - Headstocks

Still cutting the various holes in the replacement headstock. Green oak is quite hard to work, and is very likely to "shake" - these splits are along the grain and do not significantly affect the strength. Compare to the very decayed original ...

A Comma butterfly [Polygonia c-album] resting on leaves. S/he didn't stay long in any one place !
also known as 'anglewing' from the conspicuous notches on the forewings.
Strong fliers, although not actually migratory they do move around, which helps diversity ...

IoM[3] - mosaic butterfly

A mosaic artwork butterfly in the sunken gardens on Douglas Promenade.
I think this is an artistic interpretation rather than truly representative.
I don't know how old these mosaic works are, but time and the weather are breaking pieces off them. Several other examples were badly damaged.

Speckled wood [Pararge aegeria] given this was seen in September, this example will be from the second generation in 2019.
Very conveniently settled on the white [grey] lichen, giving me a contrasting background.

2014 has seen quite a few butterflies ------ this Buddleia has been visited many times. The two in this image are a Peacock (Inachis io) and a Small Tortiseshell (Aglais urticae).
oaw - mating flutter

We came upon this pair of mating butterflies. I think they are "gatekeeper" or "hedge brown" (Pyronia tithonus) in some scrubby grassland near Whitehaven (west coast of England, near The Lake District). A little further north and west of what I think of as the normal / traditional range.

Somewhat over-exposed and hasty capture. These don't stay around for long ... This is the male, the female he was chasing around was only a few inches away, and he was soon off again. (Which should mean I will have a few more to see next year!)

There are at least three butterflies, plus some bees and other insects on this bush (possibly not visible in this image).

Butterfly struggling to escape from a window. I tried to arrange a "capture and release" exercise but the business owner was extremely un-helpful, I left without achieving anything but upsetting myself.
We have not been back to this establishment since, despite visiting the locality regularly !
Almost certain that this butterfly is an example of a Marbled white [Melanargia galathea]
The poor thing will have died there, even if the "Nasty Man" didn't swat it or spray fly-killer about ...

Probably the biggest example of a "small tortishell" butterfly seen in 2015. Although I didn't get an image of it, there was one about half the size fluttering about.

Aphantopus hyperantus is a medium-sized butterfly with a wingspan of up to 35 to 42 millimeters. The wing upper and lower sides are solid brown with small, yellowish-rimmed eye-spots (sometimes absent) Light coloured margin to the wings.

This thistle is approaching five feet in height - I'll try and id it properly soon........ it is very attractive to bees, butterflies etc so I'll need to visit in the evening.
