Looking at the upper building, from slightly above. Part of a water pumping system - probably to do with the "Blue Streak" rocket programme. [last of 3 images] Seems to be a drystone / rubble wall, but with a mortared core for added stability. Definitely very well built.

A very neatly built wall, using limited amounts of mortar, giving the appearance of dry stone walling.

The upper building from the water pumping system has lost a good part of the protective wall (on the right hand side of the opening)

Looking down at the lower building from near the upper building, the official steps are to the right. Examining the shape of the river bed in front of the lower building, I am inclinced to think that there was a weir (somewhere like between the two large rocks) to pond back enough depth of water for pumping, and possibly as a stilling basin for discharged water.

A few yards away in the grass, these are possibly some intake sections or penstocks related concrete parts from the pumping station system.

The lower building of the water pumping station that supplied cooling water abstracted from the R.Irthing to the "Blue Streak" test facilities at what is now RAF Spadeadam on the hills above, the upper building is visible on the skyline. This system dates from approx 1955 and has been derelict since the early 1970s. [11prehww3/8/22]
