Language was not a constitute of thought at the most fundamental levels, but that thought was in some immediate sense-preverbal, and that its essential forms must there be embodied in the structure of all intelligible language. ~ Schopenhauer

Mystery of 'Willing" !

30 Jan 2023 1 1 27
. . . the next stage in our enquiry should be an investigation of what it is that constitutes our willing. However, when we do launch ourselves into such an investigation we come up against the surprising fact that much if not most of what constitutes our willing is not open to our knowledge. And this turns out to be true whether we take ‘willing’ in the narrower or the more extended of the two senses we have considered so far. . . . .For instance, if I hold up the forefinger of my hand and say, ‘I am now going to could to three, and on the word “three” I shall crook my finger,’, I shall infallibly do it, but how I do it is a mystery to me which my studying physiology or neurology will do nothing to dispel. My finger bends, but how do I bend my finger? Motor nerves carry instructions, but how am I able to send such instruction ‘at will,’ as we so significantly say? How, is this sense, do I decide or do anything at all in the way of willed activity? The mystery is as baffling to us today as it was to the ancients. ~ Page 132

. . . We have to raise almost impossibly deep levels of presupposition in our own thinking and imagination to the level of self-consciousness before we are able to achieve a critical awareness of all our realistic assumptions, and thus achieve all understanding of transcendental idealism which is untainted by them. This, of course, is one of the explanations for the almost unfathomable deep counter-intuitive transcendental idealism, and also for the general notion of ‘depth’ with which people associate Kantian and post-Kantian philosophy. Something akin to it is the reason for much of the prolonged, self-disciplined meditation involved in a number of Eastern religious practices. ~ Page 106

"From 1905 to 1907 in a Nutshell

Below we offer a summary of the many-voiced symphony of ideas about energy and mass in Einstein's mind that eventually led to his breakthrough in 1907, resulting in a far deeper understanding of the meaning of the equation that he had first written down in his 'annus mirabilis'

PLATO AND ARISTOTLE -- PHILOSOPHY'S TWO WORLDS Plato on the left, holds the Timacus, a work of abstract metaphysics, and points to higher things. Aristotle clutches his Ethics , and says by his gesture that we should keep our feet on the ground. These two opposing tendencies in philosophy have been in conflict throughout its history The weak are always anxious for justice and equality. The strong pay no heed to either ~ Aristotle
