Locke writes, “Person is a forensic concept” (1689). This is more a constraint on what counts as a person than a full definition: to be a person is to be the sort of thing to which we attach praise, blame, and responsibility. Further, persons are said to be thinking things (Descartes 1641), rational (Kant (1785) to have intentional states and be able to attach intentional states to others (Dennett 1976), to have second-order intentional states (Frankfurt 1980), to be beings that assess their preferences and endeavor to act accordingly (Friedman 1989), and to be beings that relate themselves to their own pasts and futures in a narrative (Korsgaard 1989, Lindemann 2014; Ricoeur 1984; Schechtman 2007; Williams 1970.
