The Mungo 3 burial in the Willandra Lakes region of southeastern Australia at least 40,000 years old. Its gender is uncertain, but red ochre powder was found on the upper part of the skeleton, perhaps originally painted on the body, perhaps added afterwards www.youtube.com/watch?v=uFAQcL5wacM

Reconstruction – this is the oldest known ceremonial burial using red ochre. Now an arid desert region, this was a fertile series of lakes, 40,000 years ago, around which some of the first Australians lived, hunting kangaroos, and collecting fish and shellfish from the lakes

The Geographical Spread of Apes and Humans

The First colonization of the world by modern humans, with approximate dates (years ago) and ice sheet / low sea levels of C. 18,000 years ago. Modern humans first emerged from Africa at least 100,000 years ago, when their fossil remains appear in sites in Israel such as Qafzen. By 12,000 years ago Homo sapiens was established in regions as far apart as Tasmania and Chile

Reconstruction of habitat and way of life of Australopithecus afarensis. Their preferred habitat was probably forest and woodland, where they foraged for food on the ground and up trees, much as chimpanzees to today, but they almost certainly also ventured out into more open areas as well, where they would have walked bipedally

Reconstruction of Homo habilis at a kill site. Partial skeleton of large and medium sized mammals surrounded by stone tools have been excavated at sites in Tanzania, Kenya and Ethiopia dating from nearly 2 million years ago. The animal bones are often marked with cuts suggesting butchery and breakage suggesting the extraction of marrow. It is not always clear, however whether the caracasses were the result of human hunting, or human scavenging from the kills of other carnivores. Sometimes, however, the cut marks do seem to precede evidence of scavenging by animals such as Hyaenas, suggesting that the people did have primary access to dead animals.

Cave wall painting

At Chauvet, a huge range of different fauna are represented. This cave bear and rhinoceros (in the image) are joined by many other species, including lions, horses, ibex, bison, aurochs, mammoths, panthers, reindeer and even an owl. Additionally, as well as human hand stencils, there are also insect-like geometric signs and some sexual images to be found. The purpose and meaning of all these paintings remains, in most respects, enigmatic.

Homo sapiens

Hyman beings come in many shapes, sizes and colours. However, under the skin, our skeletons and our genes show that we are all closely related. The variations we see today probably all developed within the last 200,000 years as our species diversified from an ancestral African population.
