A simple, line-drawn label adorns this box from a Burlington, Iowa cigar maker. Simple labels like this one stand in direct contrast to their more elaborate, stone-lithographed counterparts popular in the day.

Lincoln_Cafe_sign_IA

For many years, this simple but charming sign has been directing hungry travelers along U.S. 30 to the Lincoln Café in Belle Plaine, Iowa. From a 35mm print.

Who wants to join me in the Time Machine for a luncheon at this wonderfully charming café? What isn’t perfect and pleasant about it? We’ll sit at the counter or take a seat in back by the mural – it doesn’t matter.

Cigar boxes which feature native American maidens are slightly scarcer than their male counterparts, and no less desirable to collectors. Moreover, they seem to be more light-hearted treatments, as evident on the Washtella brand cigar box from Pella, Iowa.

I hope Anamosa has been spared from the terrible flooding currently plaguing Iowa.

Charles_Theatre_IA

A well-maintained and stupefyingly cool facade in Charles City, Iowa... despite the ubiquitous overcast day. (sigh) Still, I would have preferred to see it before the marquee was updated, but at least it's being well cared for. 2006.

A hazy day in Waukon, Iowa... but I haven't been back there since, so it was as good a time as any to shoot this old theatre with an interesting turreted marquee. 2006

An uncommon configuration, this antique tri-fold postcard features a nice, sharp pivoting panoramic view of Eagle Grove, Iowa, circa 1912. Eagle Grove is just down the road from Thor (seriously!) in Wright County, in rural north central Iowa. From this view, it seems like Eagle Grove had all the makings of a burgeoning, medium-sized city, but its recent population has hovered around a quaint 3400.

Compare this whimsical, antique "Dairy City" cigar label from the late 1800's to a mechanically printed postcard postmarked 1912 and you'll see many of the same buildings on old Franklin Street, looking north, in Manchester, Iowa. Manchester is a town of roughly 5,000 people on old U.S. route 20 in Delaware County, eastern Iowa. The cigar label was printed by the famed lithoghaphers, G.S. Harris & Sons, located in Philadelphia, and came from an old Victorian scrapbook.
