The current ferry was built in 1984 and was designed and built at Oulton Broad by the late Fred Newson & the present owner David Archer. It can carry up to 3 cars at a time and can carry a maximum weight of 12 tonnes. There has been a crossing at Reedham since the early 17th Century. In 1949 the ferry was still hand-wound across the river Yare until early 1950 when it was motorised.

Albion

Norfolk Wherry Albion sails slowly upstream on the River Yare near Berney Arms. It was a great pleasure to see this rare survivor under sail. She was built for Bungay maltsters, W.D. and A.E. Walker in 1898 and has been in the care of the Norfolk Wherry Trust since 1949.

Polkey's Mill

08 Jul 2023 1 156
This drainage mill was restored by the Norfolk Windmills Trust between 1981 and 2006. It is unusual in that the sails rotate in a clockwise direction unlike most mills. It worked until 1941 when new diesel engines were installed nearby. The corrugated iron Seven Mile pumping shed houses the two Ruston Hornsby diesel engines which operated until 1984. The building was moved to its present position during flood defence works in 2003.
