Shovelling coal into the feed hoppers of the automatic stokers at Claymills pumping station. The blocks on the floor are made from compressed rapeseed waste and are being trialled as an alternative to very expensive coal. Clearly these are unsuitable for the stokers and therefore have to be hand fired. They burn very hot but do not have enough surface area to volume to raise steam as well as coal. If they could be broken down to pieces the same size as the coal used, then maybe they would be a worthwhile substitute.

Tinker, Shenton were a large manufacturer of boilers at their Hyde Boiler Works near Manchester. This is one of two Lancashire boilers installed in 1910 at the top hydraulic pump house of the Shropshire Union Railway and Canal Company at Ellesmere Port. They supplied steam at 100 p.s.i. to four engines providing hydraulic power for the dock cranes and also water supply to a nearby flour mill. Three of the engines have been restored and can be seen in steam at times, although steam is now provided by a more modern boiler situated in a separate building.

The pumping station at Mill Meece lifted water from boreholes for the Staffordshire Potteries Water Board which was then supplied to Stoke and Newcastle via a reservoir at Hanchurch. The two compound steam engines at Mill Meece have been preserved and are operated on certain weekends during the summer. There are three Lancashire boilers and this is the one currently used. The pipework contains the underfeed stokers and forced draughting whilst the red hoppers contain the coal.
