Shortly before sunrise SY 1662 sets off for Wujing after a stop by a road crossing to drop off miners who have just finished their nightshift at one of the Meihekou collieries. The temperature was hovering around -30C and the exhaust hung for a long time in the still air.

QJs 3487 and 1850 with JS 5290 on a westbound freight at Weizigou a short time after leaving Tumen on the line towards Jilin. All locomotives were in steam but I think that the second QJ and the JS were being taken to the workshops for overhaul.

SY 1662 has just arrived at Sanjing (third) Mine is the southern terminus of the Meihekou Coal Railway. The pointsman is now ready for the shunting to begin. The shelter behind the point lever indicates the platform used by the passenger service for miners.

The river bridge at Bi Shui provided excellent photographic opportunities in the morning. This view has long been lost due to a new road being built. Here a QJ heads an early morning train from Tumen on the border with North Korea, towards Dunhua and Jilin.

It's bitterly cold as SY 1662 hurries a train comprising empty spoil tippers and coal trucks towards the mine at Sanjing. It took some rapid driving on dodgy roads to catch up with the train at this crossing.

I only visited the Meihekou coal railway for one day and it was very, very, cold! The only way to survive was to keep moving around and only stop to take photos for brief moments. After servicing SY1662 is seen here at Yijing preparing to collect a train of empty wagons for the Sanjing mine at the end of the line.

QJ 3487 starts an eastbound train from the wayside station at Weizigou on the line between Jilin and Tumen. It is only 20km to Tumen where some of the passengers will cross into North Korea.

In bitter cold conditions and with the usual diesel out of action, SY 1662 had worked the early morning passenger service to the mines. It now heads for Yijing yard for servicing followed by coal hauling duties.
