Islands

Heading home past the Cat and Fiddle as the light was almost gone I was presented with this view of Shutlingsloe sitting in a sea of fog. The distant "island" is Mow Cop.

45379 approaching Apesford

Black '5' 45379 has just shut off for the level crossing at Apesford as it heads an afternoon service towards Caldon Low. The bulk of Shutlingsloe stand proud on the horizon.

45379 approaching Apesford

25 Feb 2012 238
The first day of the Churnet Valley Railway steam weekend was blessed with a lot of sunshine and a strong cold wind. The Black '5' from the Mid Hants Railway is seen here approaching the crossing at Apesford on its second run of the day up to Caldon Low. This shot is special to me because it also features the mighty Shutlingsloe in the far distance.

Shutlingsloe from Bakestonedale

A reminder of a Boxing Day walk a couple of years ago. It is being able to access landscape such as this within a few minutes of home that makes living here so enjoyable.

From Cumberland Valley

Shutlingsloe from Cumberland Valley. Not many people up there on this day.

It's that hill again!

19 Aug 2010 181
A great day for walking and I headed for Roach End and Back Forest in the company of Eagle142 and the tarboathounds. Fantastic views and lighting conditions and it didn't rain once! Shutlingsloe is seen here from on the hilltop near Hanging Stone. Midgley Farm is in the foreground and the Rose & Crown at Allgreave is just visible on the left margin.

Shutlingsloe again

A view from Bakestonedale Moor, close to the start of the Boxing Day walk, with Shutlingsloe peeking over the distant ridges.

Almost in the clouds

Looking to Bosley Minn from the summit of Shutlingsloe on a day when the clouds were almost touching my head.

The flagged path to heaven

Pilgrims on the skyline having ascended the flagged path to the heaven that is Shutlingsloe. Mind you it can be quite windy in this particular heaven. ;-)

Moor and hill

Another shot from a day out walking with Eagle1942. Shutlingsloe seen from below Shining Tor after we climbed up the valley from Thursbitch.

Shutlingsloe sunshine

21 Feb 2009 167
Not much sun today, but when it did show for a few minutes it made a fine show of Shutlingsloe.

Shutlingsloe from near Gun End

24 Nov 2008 196
Today it was chilly but bright and I went walking with my sister around the Staffordshire moorlands near the Roaches. Towards the end of the walk the sun on Shutlingsloe caught my eye. If you look closely on the large image you can see two people on top next to the trig point.

Shutlingsloe from Cats Tor

25 Nov 2008 252
Today was bright and cold with a skittering of snow on the hills where the ground was frozen quite hard - a great day for walking. Eagle1942 accompanied me on a circular walk from Pym Chair through the valley of the Todd Brook past Thursbitch, and then up to Shining Tor, highest point in Cheshire. Lunch was taken at the Cat and Fiddle before returning along the ridge from Shining Tor past Oldgate Nick. The lowering afternoon sunlight bathed the countryside for miles around in a golden glow, and this shot was taken looking back southwards to Shutlingsloe and Macclesfield Forest. It was so peaceful up there on the moors with just the chackle of the grouse to be heard.

Bullstones

The Bullstones is a stone circle around a large standing stone and associated with a burial. Shutlingsloe broods in the background.

Shutlingsloe from Wincle Minn

On our walk in the hills, whilst Eagle1942 was photographing the approaching rain rain in the west, I was pointing the camera north-eastwards across the valley of the Shell Brook to the sunlit slopes of Shutlingsloe.

Cheshire vista

Shutlingsloe seen from Shining Tor at the peaty eastern extremity of Cheshire.

Dane Thorn Colliery

23 Aug 2008 304
The hills of East Cheshire have seen extensive coal mining in some fairly remote locations. This is the site of the Dane Thorn Colliery which was working in the second half of the nineteenth century. I was standing by the collapsed adit entrance to the upper workings and looking along the line of the tubroad to the waste tip which has the greener vegetation. To the left of the tip are the remains of a small stone building. This must have been a hard place to work in winter when a walk of several mile would have been necessary to reach the mine each day. Behind is Shutlingsloe and the communications on Croker Hill is visible in the centre background.

Shutlingsloe from Dingle Bank

13 Apr 2008 189
It's that hill again! Shutlingsloe can be seen from a great distance. This view is looking across Dingle Bank sand quarry in Lower Withington.
