Rochester cement works

22 Dec 2012 364
There are still reminders of the internal railway system at the site of the Rochester cement works that was operated by Rugby Group until 2000. The closure of this works brought an end to all cement production in the Thames and Medway area.

Snodland paper mill

Smurfit-Kappa now operate the paper mill at Snodland which was first established c1740 and in 1854 purchased by the Hook family. It was later owned by Times Newspapers and produced newsprint for their brands.

Descending Tenterden Bank

07 Nov 2011 257
Austerity HE3791 cautiously descends Tenterden Bank on the approaches to Rolvenden on the Kent & East Sussex Railway. The straw on the road was a relic of a recent foot and mouth disease scare and had presumably been soaked in disinfectant when first laid down.

The Austerity and the Tup

Austerity HE3791, named after the erstwhile manager of the line, ascends Tenterden Bank on the Kent & East Sussex Railway at the start of the Hop Pickers Weekend in 2007.

Snodland Crossing

Networker 466 005 arriving at Snodland with train to Strood. I wonder how much longer the signalbox with its natty little extension will survive.

The Black Griffin

The Black Griffin, 40 St Peters Street, Canterbury was once in the ownership of brewers W E & J Rigden & Co Faversham. The pub has had a spell named 'Hobgoblin' but has now reverted to its original title.

Road trip

11 May 2011 217
Just back from a long road trip across Europe where I took far too many photographs. On the way to the ferry a stop at the Rochester works, formerly owned by Rugby Cement, revealed that most of the site had been levelled apart from the offices and the storage silos.

Rolvenden crossing

29 Nov 2008 280
SECR P 753 crosses the main road at Rolvenden with a short demonstration goods train. This working was completely unannounced and was, I think, a case of adding the wagons to a necessary light engine movement to Tenterden in order to create an interesting effect. This did mean that there weren't many people about to get in the way of the shot. :-)

Tenterden Bank

10 Sep 2007 230
Just like a model railway - Kent & East Sussex Railway P Class No.753 takes a short freight onto Tenterden Bank shortly after departing from Rolvenden. This was a case of being in the right place at the right time as this working was not advertised and appeared to be a positioning move for the wagons using the locomotive intended for service on the vintage coaches for the rest of the day.
