Delprat Shaft

The Delprat shaft, which was commenced in 1900, is named after Broken Hill Proprietary general manager from 1899 to 1921, G D Delprat. The original wooden headframe was replaced in 1952 with the current steel structure. Winding here ceased in 1972 and the shaft has subsequently seen use as a tourist attraction until nearby mining operations caused its closure in 2007.

British Mine

The Thompson Shaft at British Mine, Broken Hill, was developed from 1910 as this area took over the main production. Winding from this shaft appears to have ended in 1958.

Tiger tunnel

The main access into the copper/silver mines above Wallah Gorge is via a long tunnel to the workings. This was developed by Burmah Mines Ltd in 1914 and is named 'Tiger Tunnel'.

Pay Office

Pay office at the mine exit above Wallah Gorge on the Burma Mines Railway. The Tiger Tunnel into the mine is in the cutting and this is marked by a Tiger Head sculpture just below the footbridge. Armed guards are everywhere around the mines due to the threat of attack by separatists. Since this visit the area has become closed after serious attacks and many deaths.

Rasp Mine

Production at the Rasp Mine in central Broken Hill has a long and profitable history. Development ceased in 2008 when metal prices fell but has since resumed and the mine currently employs c160 people. Annual production is planned to average 34,000 tonnes of zinc metal in concentrate, 28,000 tonnes of lead metal in concentrate, and 1.1 million ounces of silver in the lead concentrate.

Bawdwin Mines

No.1 winder for the Marmion Shaft at the Bawdwin mine in north-east Myanmar. This was manufactured at the Siemens Works of English Electric at Stafford in the UK in 1925 and has been continuously in use since. The motor drive is rated at 295hp using 550 volts and drawing up to 436 amps. The No.2 winder is situated above and behind in the same building. Both units wind from a single shaft that is 1700ft deep and serves 14 levels. Currently the workings are flooded up to the sixth (adit) level at c700ft due to the pumps being switched off. The mine produces high grade ore containing silver, lead, zinc, and a little copper and gold. An image grabbed in great haste. This is in a military area and normally closed to outsiders. The industrial premises here are not officially open to view.

No.2 Winder

The mine was reworked by North Broken Hill Ltd between 1946 and 1962, and again by South Broken Hill Ltd. until 1972. The wooden headframe is the oldest on the line of lode and was erected at Browne Shaft in the 1890s athough it has been modified several times. The winding enginehouse and ore bins here date from the 1946 reworking.

Wheal Betsy

The most recent mining history at Wheal Betsy dates from 1806 with this enginehouse being erected for the Cornish pumping engine in 1868. The engine didn't work here for long as the mine closed in 1877. The mine worked lead, silver and copper.
