Coke being pushed from an oven into the coke car at Monckton coke works at Royston. The Monckton Coke & Chemical Company was owned by Hargreaves Services plc and had been producing metallurgical coke for more than 130 years at its site near Barnsley, South Yorkshire. At the time Monckton was the only independent coke works in the UK, producing more than 200,000 tonnes per year of the highest-quality coke for markets worldwide. The works closed at the end of 2014.

Colliery Fire

Plaque in the former Hockley Methodist Chapel (now Poynton Christian Fellowship) commemorating the successful extinguishing of the fire in the local pits. The colliery report for 1849 states: 'On 26th January last we had an awful fire in three of the pits, Lord Pit, Lady Pit, and Albert Pit, which, I am thankful to say, was providentially extinguished without the loss of life.'

On the burning tip

Some of the waste material being removed by the stripping shovels at Sandaoling opencast coal mine was on fire. This material was taken to a specific tip where it could burn itself out. The clouds of dust and smoke in the distance are from a wagonload of spoil just being tipped.

Firewatching

Perched atop a gantry over the roof of the former Ordnance Factory No.10 (Roften) at Hooton was this very rare item to find in situ. It is a 'Consol' firewatching shelter which were installed in order to provide some protection from shrapnel for the firewatchers who were there to protect the factory from incendiary bombs. It is made of a goodly thickness of mild steel and contained a seat and small shelf with, almost certainly, a telephone. This site which manufactured heavy anti-aircraft guns during WWII has since been demolished.

A little local difficulty

01 Jun 2017 1 261
On a trip out along the River Weaver we experienced a little local difficulty when the exhaust caught fire due to a large build-up of carbon in the pipe. This type of event is particularly impressive at night when you can see the incandescent lumps of carbon erupting from the exhaust and raining down on all and sundry. In this daytime view you can see the lumps flying out amidst the flames and the steerer taking evasive action as his tee shirt is beginning to burn into holes. It was all over in a couple of minutes, leaving a carpet of oily carbon pieces to be swept from the cabin roof.

"Consol" shelter

Advert for fire watching shelter. There are still odd ones lying around as the steel they were made of was so thick.

A rare find

Whilst out walking the dogs the other day I espied an interesting feature perched atop a gantry over the roof of the former Ordnance Factory No.10 (Roften) at Hooton. This is a very rare item to find in situ and is a 'Consol' firewatching shelter. These were installed in order to provide some protection from shrapnel for the firewatchers who were there to protect the factory from incendiary bombs. It is made of a goodly thickness of mild steel and contained a seat and small shelf with, almost certainly, a telephone. This is one of two that survive at this site which manufactured heavy anti-aircraft guns during WWII.
