Namtu New Smelter

The new smelter at Namtu was constructed after the Second World War during which the old smelter was destroyed. It processed lead, silver, zinc and copper from the Bawdwin mines but has been out of use for some time. It was suggested that it would reopen in 2012 but I have not heard anything of this since my visit.

The Namtu Flue

A long flue leads to the chimney from the old lead/zinc smelter at Namtu, Myanmar. The lack of vegetation on the hillside around the chimney is a good indication of the heavy metal fallout.

It was suggested that it would reopen in 2012 but I have not heard anything of this since my visit. The chimney in the background is at the end of a long flue from the smelter and is intended to carry the noxious fumes away from the works. The poisonous nature of these emissions is evident in the lack of vegetation on the hilltop.

Coke movement from the storage bunkers at the Port Pirie smelter is by this telpher and grab. Mangrove Rat suggested an early start to catch the light around the harbour and smelter area, and it was certainly worth the effort.

Cornish influence in metal mining can be found all over the world. This compressed air powered hauling engine supplied by Holman Brothers of Camborne is at the old lead/zinc smelter in Namtu in north-east Burma. It was used to haul ladles of hot metal away from the furnaces. Best viewed large .

Higher than the birds

The ferrous alloys plant at Glossop was always controversial due to the emissions from the very tall chimney that dominated the town. The landforms around Glossop are such that even such a tall structure did not mean that fumes were dissipated quickly. Today the production of Ferromolybdenum is long finished and the plant is being demolished.
