A prominent landmark in Ellesmere Port is this concrete water tower at the Bridgewater paper mill site. The mill is long gone but the tower remains due to the aerials attached to it.

There has been a paper mill on this site in Ramsbottom since James and Samuel Broadbent Ingham built one here in the 1850s. This is its last form as it was already recently closed when I took this photo in 2009 and the majority of the site has since been cleared.

It has become a regular occurrence to see paper waste being spread on land as a soil conditioner. This mountain was being loaded into spreaders for application onto the fields on the uplands of Lyme Handley.

The UPM paper mill at Shotton generates 22MW of electricity in its on site power station using biomass and recycled materials as fuel. This is to be increased in 2017 with another 4.5MW turbine to use excess process steam since the closure of one paper making machine.

The boilers are partly fuelled with the ink that has been reclaimed from recycled paper that is being put into the production of newsprint. There is currently little/no rail traffic to/from the site.

Smurfit-Kappa now operate the paper mill at Snodland which was first established c1740 and in 1854 purchased by the Hook family. It was later owned by Times Newspapers and produced newsprint for their brands.

Went to have a peek at a paper mill today. Great place with plenty of scope for photography. Silos and tanks here at the end of the building where the pulp is prepared from recycled paper. These are for the waste material, such as ink, from the preparation flotation process.
