Red and more red

Another shot of the glorious red leaves of a Silver Maple tree growing in Bowness Park. Though there are other Silver Maple trees in the city, this is the only one that has leaves that turn red, suggesting it is a hybrid.

Silver Maple

Not too happy with this image, apart from the lovely colour. I just have to post a red Silver Maple leaf each fall now, though, as this is so rare in our city! This Silver Maple tree, possibly a hybrid, is only a tiny tree that is growing in Bowness Park, so there are limited leaves from which to choose.

Go for the red

This is the only Silver Maple tree in the city whose leaves turn red in the fall, so it is probably a hybrid. The underside of the leaves is pale grey/silver coloured. A lot of damage was done to most of the leaves this year, maybe by hail?

Oh, Canada

A somewhat "damaged" Silver Maple leaf from a tree in Bowness Park. I'm not sure why pretty well every single leaf was badly damaged - maybe from hail? A pity, as this is the only tree of its kind in Calgary, if I remember correctly. It's so exciting to see real, RED Maple leaves! Nancy, I think you must have picked the only perfect leaf on the whole tree, LOL!

Turning

Apparently, there are other Silver Maple trees in Calgary, but their leaves do not turn red in the fall. This particular tree in Bowness Park has leaves that do turn bright red, so it is probably a hybrid Silver Maple. The leaves in this photo are on the way to achieving their brillliant and beautiful colour.

The marvel of Maple

These gorgeous (Amur?) Maple leaves were blowing in the wind at the Calgary Zoo recently. I so rarely get to see and photograph Maple of any kind, so I was happy to find this beauty. Interestingness#275 explore2008October24.

Amur Maple seedpods + spider

These are the seedpods of the Amur Maple tree, growing at Shannon Terrace, Fish Creek Park. Didn't notice the tiny spider until I downloaded my photos : )

Silver Maple

Very few leaves left on the trees here now. I would imagine that this little Silver Maple tree, in Bowness Park, is completely bare, from people removing the gorgeous red leaves to take home, or by Mother Nature herself.

A Maple - at last!

I was SOOOO thrilled to see this Silver Maple tree in Bowness Park yesterday afternoon! I had longed to be able to take photos of glorious red Maple leaves and finally got the chance. People were arriving to look at this tree and some had obviously heard about it already. I felt SO guilty leaving the park with several leaves in my hand.

Oh, Canada....

This is one of several gorgeous Maple leaves I brought home from Bowness Park a few days ago. I'm still puzzled, as the shape of the leaf is that of Silver Maple, yet anything I have read about this species says that the leaves are yellow in fall, not red. Need to do more research : ). I held this leaf up against my backyard fence, as it was very windy. Note, later: apparently, it is definitely Silver Maple, perhaps just genetically different (hybrid?).

Fall's finest

This gorgeous tree was at the Calgary Zoo. Just had to photograph its leaves, though I'm not sure what kind of tree it is.

Manitoba Maple

Seen at the Reader Rock Garden, Calgary. "Acer negundo is a species of maple native to North America. Box Elder, Boxelder Maple, and Maple Ash are its most common names in the United States. In Canada it is known as Manitoba Maple. In addition, there are other English names such as Ash Maple, Ash-leaf Maple, Black Ash, Boxelder Maple, California Boxelder, Cutleaf Maple, Cut-leaved Maple, Inland Boxelder, Negundo Maple, Red River Maple, Stinking Ash, Sugar Ash, Three-leaved Maple, and Western Boxelder. In Russia it is called American Maple (Russian: американский клён)." Taken from Wikipedia website.
