Puffballs

16 Dec 2009 120
There seem to be three stages in the growth of these Puffballs shown here. I think that those are empty, shrivelled ones up in the top left corner. These were seen on a hike along the Jumpingpound Loop, Kananaskis, more than two years ago.

Fungus

14 Mar 2008 122
Came across this brighty coloured fungus on a hike at Jumpingpound Loop, Kananaskis, last year. I always think that it looks as if someone has gone round with a paintbrush and palette!

Fallen

22 Jan 2008 108
Apparently, this mushroom is different because it widens towards the base. Not a very inspiring photo, but I liked the pattern of the gills.

Fungi

26 Nov 2007 113
We saw these fungi on a hike at Jumpingpound Loop, Kananaskis, back in September. There was such a huge variety of fungi in that area.

Lycoperdon perlatum

19 Oct 2007 100
Saw these mushrooms a few weeks ago when hiking the Jumpingpound Loop in Kananaskis. Not sure if I've ever seen mushrooms covered in little spines before. There were so many different kinds of fungi growing there in the forest. I was in "seventh heaven"!

Puffballs

10 Sep 2007 112
Yesterday, I was very lucky to have been invited to go on a day bus trip out to Kananaskis, to hike the Jumpingpound Loop trail. Apart from a few drops of rain towards the end of the hike, we had great weather for this walk. I still can't believe how many different kinds of mushrooms we saw! These Puffballs were among the many species.

A different fly

10 Sep 2007 92
I'm not sure what kind of fly this is, seen out on the Jumpingpound Loop trail on Saturday. I thought it was rather nicely marked on the back.

On fire

10 Sep 2007 143
Our hike in the mountains yesterday, along the Jumpingound Loop trail, took us through forest and also into patches of more open hillside, as in this photo. The Fireweed had turned this beautiful colour and made such a spectacular sight! Perfect weather. What more could one want??

Mushroom

11 Sep 2007 1 79
I was so happy to see a red mushroom on Saturday, during a hike in Kananaskis on the Jumpingpound Loop. So many different species of mushroom were growing there.

Coiled Aster petals

13 Sep 2007 115
Not a great photo, but I wondered if anyone has any suggestions as to why the petals on one of the flowers are all so precisely coiled! I've never seen this before. Note on 13th September 2007: I have just been looking at a photo and information about the New England Aster (on Google), and it said that "once pollination has finished, the rays of the bloom begin to turn brown and curl up like a party whistle." In the photo I found, some of the petal coils were still purple, like mine. So, mystery solved!

Mushroom

Another mushroom seen on the Jumpingpound Loop trail in Kananaskis. A different colour and texture. P9080005

Fly in fall

18 Sep 2007 104
Nothing spectacular, but I mainly liked the mixture of soft, early fall colours.

Mushroom

21 Sep 2007 89
One of the many species of mushroom that we came across while hiking the Jumpingpound Loop in Kananaskis recently. Thought this was rather a nice specimen.

White Gills

A closer look at a beautiful red mushroom I saw on a hike in the mountains at Jumpingpound Loop, Kananaskis.
