Fungus on a fallen branch

19 Aug 2012 151
Macro photo of a rather beautifully coloured fungus that was growing on a fallen branch in the forest on Rod Handfield's land the day before yesterday, 17 August 2012. A group of us went there for a day of botanizing and mushroom hunting. Though the number of fungi was far less than some previous years, we still managed to find quite a few different species, making the day very worthwhile. Of course, the difficult part now for me is identifying the fungi that I photographed. A list was sent out to us, and so I will be able to put an ID to some of my images, but have not got the ID for this one yet. Thanks for the ID, Art! Violet Toothed Polypore /Trichaptum biformis.

A bunch of polypores

05 Nov 2011 166
Just a jumble of Polypores, and perhaps "old" ones, growing from a tree in Weaselhead. Not particularly photogenic, but I was happy to see any fungi in the month of June (June 14th) : )

Rusty Gilled Polypore / Gloeophyllum sepiarium

21 Sep 2011 165
I think I've identified this fungus correctly! You often find several of these fungi growing in a row or cluster on a log. Photographed (macro) at Maclean Pond, Kananaskis (off Elbow Falls Trail) on August 16th. "Gloeophyllum sepiarium is a wood decay fungus that causes a brown rot. Gloeophyllum sepiarium grow in thin, dark brown/green brackets on coniferous trees. Fruiting bodies can be seen throughout the year, but it sporulates in late summer to autumn. Gloeophyllum sepiarium is infrequent and inedible." en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gloeophyllum_sepiarium

Black footed polypore

26 Aug 2011 163
Unfortunately, in my photo it looks as if the "stalk" might just be in shadow, but in fact it is black. Came across this photo that I hadn't posted back in the summer of 2009 and wanted to add it to my set of images taken on Rod Handfield's property, south of Calgary, near Millarville. As you can see, this fungus has pores on the underside of the cap, not gills. I'm not sure if this is a Bay-brown Polypore (Polyporus badius).

Polypore

These colourful Polypores are pretty common in the forest, growing on trees. Photographed this one at Brown-Lowery Provincial Park on August 20th.

Mind-boggling

Apologies to Doug for "stealing" his icon, LOL! I forgot all about posting this image - I uploaded a different shot of this brilliant orange fungus ages ago, but its background was green, I think, with trees or bushes in the background. Photographed on 14th October 2008, so just over a year ago. Doug, it will probably give you a weird feeling when you see "your icon" posted : ) Thanks to Doug for the ID, Pycnoporus cinnabarinus, "Cinnabar-red Polypore". Found in Griffith Woods on 14th October 2008, just over a year ago. I did it again - why do I do it?? After a volunteer shift this afternoon, I decided to dash just southwest of the city to try and get a few sky shots, as we had a pretty good build up of cloud. Now, just a week after washing my car, it is once again covered in mud from the muddy, snowy (which I hadn't expected), gravel side roads. As often seems to happen, the sky looked more dramatic in person than in a photo - but, knowing I will have to wash my car again so soon, I will find at least one photo to upload - if it kills me, LOL!

Oozing refraction

11 Aug 2009 139
A really "cluttered" photo taken in low light, but I was just delighted to finally find some refraction in SOMETHING, LOL! Saw this colourful Polypore growing on a tree in Bragg Creek Provincial Park three days ago. Occasionally, one of these Polypores will have droplets of some kind of liquid around the lower edge and underneath and I'm not sure just what that liquid is, but the droplets look so pretty. Thanks to Gorpie for telling me that the droplets are caused by guttation! Much appreciated!

Let's decorate the tree

Not as sharp as it could be, but I liked the Polypore fungus (thanks, Machel - I am never 100% certain, so thought it safer not to give any ID) and lichens decorating this narrow tree trunk. Seen at Brown-Lowery Provincial Park on 4th September 2008.

Brightening the day

Back in September, we came across these gorgeous fungi growing on an old log at Mallard Point, Fish Creek Park. Just love the colour : )

Fungus amongus

10 Oct 2008 113
This was one of the few fungi I found at Bowness Park recently (other than the spectacular purple mushroom that I found a little while ago). I suspect it will be a case of having to wait till next year now : (

Fungus

Came across this brighty coloured fungus on a hike at Jumpingpound Loop, Kananaskis, last year. I always think that it looks as if someone has gone round with a paintbrush and palette!

Polypore fungus

06 Sep 2007 106
This log was in a bit of woodland near the edge of the Bow River at Pearce Estate this morning. The Polypore fungi, possibly Turkey Tail, that were growing on it were fresh and beautifully coloured.

Treasures of a log

A fresh Polypore (thanks, Doug!) fungus (not surprised, after all the rain we've had!) on an old log on one of my recent walks. I liked the vein pattern in the dead leaf, too.
