This morning is heavily overcast, with a temperature of 3C (windchill 1C). This afternoon, it is expected to soar to a balmy 7C, with rain. Hopefully, it will be dry this evening, when kids are out trick-or-treating. I noticed that there are snowflake icons on the weather forecast chart for the next five days.
Unfortunately, this photo is the closest I've come to having a photo to post on Halloween. I'm not sure if these pumpkins were real or if they were sculptures, as they were seen at the KOAC art centre in Springbank, on 27 October 2017. Two of us stood there, wondering if they were real, but then I must have got distracted by something, because I never did find an answer.

Straight from there, I drove east of the city to see and photograph an old barn that I had wanted to see for a number of years. A friend posted a photo of an old barn the other day and it turned out to be the very barn that I hadn't yet found. Without being asked, he told me exactly where it was. I had been looking for it just a few days before and must have missed it by just one road.
Early morning, I set out to drive west of the city, to meet a small group of friends at a very special place. It was just starting to get light when I left home and the pink sunrise colours over the distant peaks was beautiful. Unfortunately, I couldn't stop anywhere to take a photo, until I actually arrived.
We had been invited to visit and do a preliminary bio-blitz at an art centre in Springbank, belonging to two amazing, vibrant, creative people who were a joy to meet. There are so many things I could write, but will instead borrow the words from various articles about this lively, hardworking couple.
A friend who usually comes out with us on our May Species Counts knows Katie and Harry and had told our main Naturalist, Gus Yaki, that they were interested in learning more about what plant species were growing on their 20 acres of land. I feel very fortunate to have been invited. Of course, it was not the best time of year to do this, though our Naturalist (unlike me) knows all the plants and trees without their flowers.
I will add some information about this generous pair, as I find again the various websites that I was looking at. I say "generous" because Katie and Harry have donated their home, Gallery, collections, and land, while continuing to live there at present. A tremendous gift!
"Harry Kiyooka and Katie Ohe have dedicated their lives to art. Their work has helped shape the local, national and international art scenes. And now they are taking the step of not just being figurative institutions on the scene, but turning their home into a literal institution for art creation.
Ohe, still a part-time instructor at ACAD (Alberta College of Art + Design), has been teaching art since 1959 and has been with ACAD since 1970. As a teacher, she has promoted the creativity of a diverse range of students. While teaching at the Calgary Allied Arts Centre, she also worked and lived out of the Hart family’s carriage house — that’s the Hart family of wrestling fame. Ohe taught art to the “Hitman” himself, Bret Hart, the eighth child of wrestling patriarch Stu Hart.
Harry didn’t seek the limelight,” says Deborah Herringer Kiss, director of the Herringer Kiss Gallery of Contemporary Art, who has known the couple for more than 15 years. “He didn’t care about having big shows or trying to get into museums. He didn’t care about any of that. He made it work by quietly, constantly creating art.”
A couple years shy of 90, Kiyooka is still a prolific painter. Inside his and Ohe’s home, his paintings hang alongside the “greats.” Other paintings line the walls of his studio, and he still works on several huge canvases. More paintings are stored behind couches and under beds, and there’s a dedicated storage room packed with filing cabinets, filled with his paintings." All three photos posted this morning were taken yesterday, 27 October 2017. It was a day filled with interest and enjoyment, and the morning was so different from the afternoon. It felt a day well spent. Normally, I never post - or even take! - photos of people, but this time was different. In the afternoon, by the way, I drove east of the city to see and photograph an old barn that I had wanted to see for a number of years. A friend posted a photo of it the other day and it turned out to be the very barn that I hadn't yet found. Without being asked, he told me exactly where it was. I had been looking for it just a few days before and must have missed it by just one road.
Early morning, I set out to drive west of the city, to meet a small group of friends at a very special place. It was just starting to get light when I left home and the pink sunrise colours over the distant peaks was beautiful. Sunset wildness

Today, 23 December 2016, we are having a heavily overcast day and the snow is steadily falling. Just noticed that there is a Snowfall Warning in effect. The temperature is -6C (windchill -11C). I don't think I need to go out, though, unless to the mailbox. Wish the old days were still here, when the mailman actually put mail in the mailbox right by your front door, instead of everyone having to use community boxes.
I had my Christmas yesterday, 22 December, with my daughter. We drove south of the city to the Saskatoon Farm and had a delicious breakfast. She is in so much pain that we can't go for a drive to look for Snowy Owls or old barns. She has an appointment next month and is more than ready to take the absolute earliest date for her surgery. On the way to drop her off at home, we called in at the Glamorgan Bakery - a well-known bakery that we have used for the last few decades. It always feels good to see their traditional cookies, Cheese Buns, cakes and pies. Thanks, Rachel, for a lovely few hours spent together - the best Christmas gift possible.

"In 2013 I purchased a herd of broken down coin-operated horses as the core components of a giant sculptural installation. These are the mechanical horses that stood outside Woodwards, Woolworths, Kresge’s, and so on, in Calgary and small towns in Southern Alberta from the 1950s through the 1980s. I believe these horses are a touchstone of that era, holding a place of local historical value in our collective cultural imagination, and that compelled me to reimagine and reactivate them in a contemporary context.
I have been presenting the horses in different configurations and environments, and emphasizing distinct elements as the project unfolds. The first iteration consisted of dynamic mechanical multiples in the 150’ public art spectacle, Spacepony for Beakerhead, 2014. The horses emerged from a UFO and invaded Fort Calgary in a historical reenactment of questionable veracity.
I then collaborated with Decidedly Jazz Danceworks on a multidisciplinary performance emphasizing movement, rhythm, and desire; Year of the Horse, at Theatre Junction Grand. For this production eight horses were further altered to battery power and remote activation, with heavy duty swivel casters and clear plexiglass base panels to reveal the mechanical workings.
The current installation at Leighton Art Centre references the herds of free-roaming horses called "Wildies" in Alberta. This stage of transformation consisted of installing solar panels, application of silver leaf (to reflect the sky and surroundings), and changing the activation to motion sensors. The reflective surfaces have a confounding effect in this prairie landscape environment, making the extremely substantial installation somewhat illusory or ephemeral."

This photo was taken on 10 November 2016, when I decided on the spur of the moment to do a short drive SW of the city. I hadn't been taking much in the way of photos for a couple of weeks and had been feeling less and less motivated to go out.
However, on this particular day, I wanted to go to the Leighton Art Centre to see Lisa's artistic display. The last day for the exhibit, before the eight horses were removed, was 13 November 2016, so I only just made it in time. By mistake, it took me much longer to get there than it should have done, despite following their map, and I arrived there five minutes after they closed. I asked if I could still wander part way down the hill to take a few photos. As the lady said, it was 'magic hour', with a wonderful sunset. At one point, the valley below and the distant mountains almost disappeared in an orange haze. It did, indeed, feel magical.
This wasn't my first visit to the Leighton Art Centre, as I had been decades ago with my youngest daughter's Kindergarten class. In more recent years, I had been a couple of times with botany friends, to list all the plant species that we could find.

JELLYFIELDS - warning!
A few days ago, I did a Google search to see what blogs have used my photos. Many of them asked permission before hand, but, needless to say, others did not. If you post photos anywhere on the Internet, that is unfortunately just a fact of life. I just scrolled down, clicking on each one in turn. When I clicked on one website in the search result list, I discovered that not only were a lot of my photos being displayed, but they were also mixed in with a pile of pornographic videos and photos. According to someone on the Flickr Help Forum, these photos were probably taken from the Jellyfields website before they disabled right-click. Not impressed one bit, I contacted Jellyfields and asked for all my photos to be removed from their site. James was in touch with me immediately and, after getting me to confirm that the displayed photos were mine, said they will remove my photos as requested. He was surprised that nature/wildlife photos would be stolen and added to a porn site, but that is exactly what has happened. Haven't yet found a way to contact the porn site, Tumview.com to demand my photos be removed. I should add that Jellyfields does refer photos back to Flickr, saying to check what the copyright is for each photo.
Who needs all this hassle?!!

Hello, winter - again! Our forecast is "Temperature deep dive, snow on the horizon for Alberta." This morning, 15 November 2016, it is -1C (windchill -4C) and it has just started snowing at 10:00 am. Looks like we should have this kind of temperature for the next two weeks. I'm so glad I went on a birding walk yesterday and did some grocery shopping.

"In 2013 I purchased a herd of broken down coin-operated horses as the core components of a giant sculptural installation. These are the mechanical horses that stood outside Woodwards, Woolworths, Kresge’s, and so on, in Calgary and small towns in Southern Alberta from the 1950s through the 1980s. I believe these horses are a touchstone of that era, holding a place of local historical value in our collective cultural imagination, and that compelled me to reimagine and reactivate them in a contemporary context.
I have been presenting the horses in different configurations and environments, and emphasizing distinct elements as the project unfolds. The first iteration consisted of dynamic mechanical multiples in the 150’ public art spectacle, Spacepony for Beakerhead, 2014. The horses emerged from a UFO and invaded Fort Calgary in a historical reenactment of questionable veracity.
I then collaborated with Decidedly Jazz Danceworks on a multidisciplinary performance emphasizing movement, rhythm, and desire; Year of the Horse, at Theatre Junction Grand. For this production eight horses were further altered to battery power and remote activation, with heavy duty swivel casters and clear plexiglass base panels to reveal the mechanical workings.
The current installation at Leighton Art Centre references the herds of free-roaming horses called "Wildies" in Alberta. This stage of transformation consisted of installing solar panels, application of silver leaf (to reflect the sky and surroundings), and changing the activation to motion sensors. The reflective surfaces have a confounding effect in this prairie landscape environment, making the extremely substantial installation somewhat illusory or ephemeral."

This photo was taken four days ago, on 10 November 2016, when I decided on the spur of the moment to do a short drive SW of the city. I haven't been taking much in the way of photos the last couple of weeks and have been feeling less and less motivated to go out.
However, on this particular day, I wanted to go to the Leighton Art Centre to see Lisa's artistic display. The last day for this exhibit was 13 November 2016, so I only just made it in time. By mistake, it took me much longer to get there than it should have done, despite following their map, and I arrived there five minutes after they closed. I asked if I could still wander part way down the hill to take a few photos. As the lady said, it was 'magic hour', with a wonderful sunset. At one point, the valley below and the distant mountains (zoomed in this photo) almost disappeared in an orange haze. It did, indeed, feel magical.
This was not my first visit to the Centre, as I had been decades ago with my youngest daughter's Kindergarten class. In more recent years, I had been a couple of times with botany friends, to list all the plant species that we could find.

This photo was taken back in 1967, when we had been living in Doha, Qatar for about six months. When we left there, to return to England before going to live in Holland for a few months, we were able to stop off en route at a few places for between 2 and 5 days, including Beirut (4 days), Jerusalem (4 days), Cairo (2 days), along the River Nile to Luxor (5 days), Athens (4 days), Rome (2 days) and Paris (2 days).
A priceless find

I was indescribably happy when I received an e-mail from one of my great friends in Birmingham the other day. The subject line said "John's drawings". I've never clicked on an e-mail so fast in my life! My friend, Anne, had come across two of my brother's old drawings when she was going through more of his papers. At least 30 years ago, John had sent two of my children a post-card sized drawings each and these have been treasured ever since. I had asked John to please, please send us more drawings over the years, but it just never happened. I even "said this to John", in words that were read out at his service : ) Even though he was an amazing artist, everyone else had more confidence in his artistic ability than he had himself, as so often can happen. To suddenly find two of his drawings "in front of me" is absolutely priceless. I suspect these were done many years ago, perhaps when he was in College, and he would no doubt say it was "just a doodle". We can't thank Anne enough for her careful search through endless piles of papers, making sure that nothing important to us is missed.
Later: oh, boy, does it never end? The moment (today) I more or less finished copying and pasting about 4,500 e-mails into Word Documents thanks to the corrupted Inbox, I plug in my two external hard drives, determined to start doing some long-overdue backing up. I got a message saying something about data being lost and that it might be a Microsoft (?) problem, data couldn't be saved to my G drive (external), though I hadn't even started to add new stuff. Then I got that nasty blue screen with the white text! Finally managed to get my computer back and running - but I don't think I will plug in my G drive again for now. Lol, what I would really love is to have a week, or even just one day, without constant stress of one kind or another!!!! I've totally forgotten what it feels like!

This is an old photo, printed from a slide and now being scanned from that print - so not exactly the best quality, ha. It was taken back in 1967, when we lived in Doha, Qatar for about six months. Egypt has been in my mind recently, of course, and I thought I would add this photo to my Middle East set. I haven't watched any News the last few days, so I'm not sure how things have progressed/changed in the last little while.

This little sketch was the second drawing that one of my friends in England discovered amongst my brother's papers recently. I suspect it may have been an assignment when he was at College many, many years ago. From what I can remember, it's not the right layout to have been his bedroomin at home, so perhaps this was his room when he was away at College or else it was an "imaginary" room. I burst into tears when I saw my brother sitting at his drafting table!
