189/366: Alien Flowerbud...No, It's a Small Onion!

10 Jul 2016 16 8 773
What the heck IS this thing? I found this a few years ago when wandering around on the Lower Tablerock with my macro lens. Now that I've finally had a chance to look online, I've identified this as a Small Onion (Allium parvum). There is a small page on wiki in case you are interested: Small Onion Explored on July 10, 2016. Highest placement, #42.

Weird and Wonderful Buckeye Seed Pod or...a Deep S…

While walking around at Michael's place, I wandered down the sidewalk to the next house over, and found a bushy tree with all kinds of odd, prickly, brown fruit on it. Thanks to Leapfrog (Art) for identification, I can tell you this is a Buckeye seed pod, and they are totally COOL! I enjoyed taking pictures and then I looked under some branches to see what it looked like, and I found this poor, sad seed pod that didn't quite make it! :D Instead of being 3" in diameter like the normal seed pod, this dud was about 1", cracked and looking like a strange alien from another planet! Totally fabulous!!! :D Explored on September 15, 2013. Highest placement, page 5.

The Prickly and Beautiful Buckeye Seed Pod!

Thanks to Leapfrog (Art) for the identification, I didn't have a clue what this could be when I took a picture, but I was totally fascinated by the prickly exterior and fabulous texture! They range in size from 3"-4" in diameter. I didn't take any because it wasn't my property, but I wanted to see what they looked like inside! Maybe I'll see about getting one the next time I'm over there! :) Stay tuned for an interior picture in a couple of weeks! :)

Angel Wings

27 Aug 2013 15 13 1041
This morning I went out to water my little garden and found a poppy pod about to fall away from an emerging poppy flower. I was amazed how much the two sides looked like angel's wings! Did you know that red poppies are the most popular poppy in the world? I found a wonderful page full of information and historical significance which you can read here if you like! :) American Meadows: The Red Poppy

2 more pictures in notes above! Today's heart-shaped seed pod is dedicated to a dear friend of mine, Pam J . She and I are both excited about growing plants from seeds, and because we live in places where it is very hot and dry during the summer, we are sharing seeds with each other in the hopes that we'll have good luck this way! It's been wonderful getting to know her, and a joy to visit her photo stream too. We even have similar luck with butterflies, lol! Take a look at her lovely Grey Hairstreak ! I hope that you'll take a peek at her pictures too. Pam is so nice and has a heart of gold! I am so happy that we met! :) Khalil Gibran (January 6, 1883 – April 10, 1931) was a Lebanese artist, poet, and writer. He is chiefly known in the English-speaking world for his 1923 book The Prophet, an early example of inspirational fiction including a series of philosophical essays written in poetic English prose. The book sold well despite a cool critical reception, gaining popularity in the 1930s and again especially in the 1960s counterculture. Gibran is the third best-selling poet of all time, behind Shakespeare and Lao-Tzu. Wikipedia: Khalil Gibran Explored on August 25, 2013. Highest placement, page 2.

"Get it Off My Face!!!!"...Adorable Baby Swift Cra…

Some of the poppys I have are extremely small, growing only a few inches off the ground. This one's head is only about 1/3" in size, and when I took a really close look at it, I saw an itty bitty Swift Crab Spider sitting on it!! I took a handful of pictures, hoping that one of them would turn out well. SUCCESS!! :D (thank you for the ID Leapfrog Art ! :) My dear pod sister Mags pointed out that this poppy looks like it's leaning back in horror from the spider on its face and it's flailing its arms in fright! "GET IT OFF ME!!! EEEEEEEE!!!!!" ROFLMAO!!!

Just an Empty Seed Pod

[best appreciated at full size against black] One of the things I've loved most all my life is my ability to notice beautiful things that others wouldn't even glance at. When it comes to nature, I think people are trained to disregard plants that are dead, since they aren't usually flashy. I've always appreciated plants in every stage of life, including when they are dead. This dried flower pod was standing right next to the mushroom I called "High Maintainance Mushroom" ( www.flickr.com/photos/sfhipchick/6796827500/in/photostream/ ), and I noticed it while gathering patience in-between my upside-down picture taking sessions. The sun was shining through the empty pod and it was just so graceful and elegant that I was compelled to capture it forever with my camera. With a mere turn of my camera and a slight adjustment, I was able to get this picture to share with all of you! I hope you like it! I've uploaded two other pictures today and I hope you'll visit them too! Thanks to all of you who have visited and have left comments and favorites! I try to go to all of your pages within a day or two and is a highlight for me to see your beautiful photography! :) NOTE! I have finally updated my profile and I hope you'll take a look to find out a little more about me and how important all of you are to my experience here on Flickr! www.flickr.com/people/sfhipchick/ This image was taken in February, 2012.

Back in March I posted the bud form of the Great Hound's Tongue . Here is the last blossom of a group of flowers with plump red pods on the left and right, full of maturing seeds. Below is a picture that should make just about anyone blush and then laugh out loud! It's a pair of seed pods but, well...it doesn't take much imagination to see what it looks like! Definately one of my funniest shots! :D I've uploaded two other pictures today and I hope you'll visit them too! Thanks to all of you who have visited and have left comments and favorites! Mardi Gras Seed Pod, AKA Sand Fringepod

17 Mar 2013 1 205
I don't know what kind of flower this is, but when I noticed this amazing seed pod, I instantly dropped down to take a picture. It's so festive and colorful! Has anyone seen a prettier seed pod?!! I wish I'd thought to take one with me, it would have been nice to plant them on our property!

Doesn't this look like an Alien egg that's opening up with a face-hugger inside?! :D But in this case, you'll see the mature seeds inside, ready for dispersal! Isn't that cool?! :D

Tiny Whitlow Grass Seeds

06 May 2013 2 2 315
One day I was crawling around in the grass looking very closely at everything as I moved around. It's amazing what you can see if you really get close to the ground! I noticed tiny flecks of shimmering white and looked closer before gasping in surprise. I was looking at the open seed pods from tiny Whitlow Grass flowers, and they had fallen away to show just the translucent inner surface where the seeds adhere to and then fall to the ground. I think they look a lot like "Money Plants"! :) It amazed me that I could actually see these little seeds, which are only about the size of the inside of the letter "e"! :D Below are pictures of a Whitlow Grass blossom and a seed pod! :)
