Gnat or Mosquito with a Droplet on its Proboscis

18 Jul 2013 12 4 857
1 more picture above in a note! :) While I was taking pictures of the starry flowers, I noticed a miniscule insect on a leaf and took a bunch of pictures in the hopes that I would get some clear ones. While I was taking pictures, I noticed that there seemed to be liquid at the end of its proboscis, and was delighted when I was able to show this droplet in the image!! (I added texture to this image to give it a more artistic style!) To be honest, I believe this is actually STOMACH juices that its barfed up and is sucking back down again. Disgusting!! I could just BARELY see the droplet--no larger than the period at the end of this sentence, and the gnat or mosquito seemed to be manipulating the droplet by lifting and lowering its proboscis and it would shrink and get larger as I watched. I really hope this is actually a droplet of nectar and not stomach juices!!! *wrinkles nose*

Micro Bee on Coneflower

Another picture from our visit to Jacksonville. I was admiring this lovely flower when I noticed a tiny bee, no larger than 1/4", crawling around. Coneflowers are one of those fabulous blossoms which have "flowers within the flower", and here you can see this little bee examining one of them!
