Mmmmmmmmmmmm....That's the Spot!

10 Nov 2012 324
I still have pictures to share from the Pirate's Parrot Show that Steve and I saw back in July! Chris Biro is showing how trusting this bird is by laying it on its back in his hand. Not only does this beautiful Blue & Gold macaw trust Chris, he's in absolute bliss, closing his eyes in pleasure as Chris gently itches the back of its head, cradling it in support. Bird's feathers grow out of hard sheath casings and they really itch. They have a hard time reaching the feathers on their heads, so gentle scratching and a bit of careful help breaking the feathers out is something parrots really love, as this bird shows perfectly! :) For information about Chris Biro's wonderful parrot conservation organization and free-flight training and seminars, please visit Bird Recovery International and Liberty Wings

Ahoy, Mateys!

This is a fun shot of the ship's mast at the Pirate's Parrot Show, complete with pirate flag and...a flock of boisterous Sun Conures! It was so much fun watching them fly around like a bunch of holligans! They really are very mischievous little guys and so cute and pretty! The Sun Conure is considered to be one of the most beautiful small parrots, and is native to northeastern South America. It is endangered in the wild, due to habitat loss and trapping for the pet trade. Banning bird exports has helped somewhat, but it is only seldom seen in its previous ranges. This bird, however, is one of the most common small parrots offered for sale in pet stores, and unfortunately, due to the loud volume of any Aritinga conure, these are also found in enormous quantities in bid rescue facilities. :( (The Sun Conures owned by Chris are all rescue birds! :D) If you would like to know more about this beautiful conure, Wiki has a page here: Wiki: Sun Conure (Sun Parakeet) For information about Chris Biro's wonderful parrot conservation organization and free-flight training and seminars, please visit Bird Recovery International and Liberty Wings

Workin' for a Living!

Steve and I could hardly believe our eyes when we saw what Chris Biro had trained a whole flock of Sun Conures to do at the Pirate's Parrot Show! People were instructed to hold a dollar bill up so the birds could see it. A conure would then fly over to the person and land on their hand, take the dollar, and fly back to the money jar, where they would drop the dollar! How's that for clever birds AND a wonderful way to get donations for Chris Biro's conservation organization, Bird Recovery International?! This was so popular that I think Chris could keep his birds busy the entire day getting donations on the fly!! It was so much fun to watch that I actually forgot to take pictures of Steve giving a dollar to a conure! :D This is also a perfect picture for mentioning that I have a new work project in and I'm going to be reducing my posts and comments for the next couple of weeks until the project is done. Thanks in advance for my light/slow comments, I hate not being able to post and visit all of your photostreams when I'm crazy busy, but hey, I'm Workin' for a Living ! :D For information about Chris Biro's wonderful parrot conservation organization and free-flight training and seminars, please visit Bird Recovery International and Liberty Wings

Pirate's Parrot Show: Eye-to-Eye

17 Aug 2012 351
I rarely pass up the opportunity to visit parrots whenever I am near them, and I was delighted at the educational parrot show put on at the Jackson County Fair a few weeks ago. The man in command, Chris Biro, has dedicated his life to educating the public about parrots and their plight, but in a way that's fun and interesting for everyone, including the birds. These captive parrots have the unique opportunity to fly as they please, and it's Chris Bro's gift to these rescue birds who all love this man with a mission.. Chris showed off his talented birds and taught the crowd things like why parrots are different than other birds, and why they are endangered in the wild. At the end of the show, he allowed the audience to line up and get the chance to hold the amazing Blue & Gold macaw in the picture above. I got a magic shot of this little boy who is realizing just how amazing and intelligent this bird is as the two look into one another's eyes. A very cool thing to witness. If you missed my information on this macaw in the first image I posted of a Blue & Gold. , here it is again: The magnificent Blue & Gold macaw, also known as a Blue & Yellow macaw or "B&G", is a fairly common wild macaw in much of South America, but is extinct, extremely threatened or endangered in many places where it was once common. This is all because of the pet trade, but bans on the import of wild parrots has helped stopped this, and some bird populations are recovering. If you would like to know more about Blue & Gold macaws, Wiki has a page here: Wiki: Blue and Gold Macaw If you would like to know about Chris Biro's wonderful parrot conservation organization, please visit Bird Recovery International By the way, I've uploaded two other pictures today and I hope you'll visit them too! Thanks to all of you who have visited and have left comments and favorites! I try to go to all of your pages within a day or two and is a highlight for me to see your beautiful photography! :)

Pirate's Parrot Show: Sun Conure (Held by Chris Bi…

Have you ever seen a parrot fly over your head? How about a whole flock?! At Chris Biro's fun and entertaining parrot show, there were birds flying around much of the time the show was going on! In fact, Chris trained about 20 Sun Conures to look for audience members who held up a dollar bill, and one would then fly over, take the bill, and fly back to a collecting jar! By the end of the show, the jar was brimming with money and there were dozens of people with dollar bills waiting to be taken by birds!! Amazing, clever, and fun, not to mention a great way for Chris to get donations for his parrot recovery program! The Sun Conure is considered to be one of the most beautiful small parrots, and is native to northeastern South America. It is endangered in the wild, due to habitat loss and trapping for the pet trade. Banning bird exports has helped somewhat, but it is only seldom seen in its previous ranges. Ruffians in Flight

There were many birds flying around at Chris Biro's Pirate's Parrot Show, and most of them were a flock of rambunctious Sun Conures. There must have been a dozen of them, all flying around, climbing everywhere, and making lots of racket! Such clever, mischievious birds! (I've made the 2nd pic public to see it larger) Chris Biro teaches his birds that he's their source of food, their protector, and their friend, and with that as a basis, slowly gives them the freedom to fly without barriers! It's a remarkable thing to see his birds flying free, and yet, they all stay with him and are very happy, well-adjusted birds! Rambunctious Sun Conures

These delightful birds are also some of the most beautiful conures. Though they are popular pets, this family (Aratinga) is very loud when mature, and sadly, unknowing new owners find out too late that their bird is now too noisy for their home. Thus, bird rescues are full of these and many other Aratinga conures. Thanks to Chris Biro, some of them have gotten a wonderful, forever home, and they get to fly free every day! 124/365: "Friendship is a word, the very sight of…

I took the dogs out for a walk around the property before dinner and brought along my camera. When I saw this incredible glowing wild pea pod, I forgot everything else and lost myself in its radiating beauty. As I took pictures, I smiled warmly because this peapod represents the strong friendships I have with so many of my dearly loved "pod sisters/pod brothers" here on ipernity. With each of you, I have formed a common bond, each of us seeing eye to eye on so many facets of our photography, the way we think, how we feel, the closeness we feel to one another. To me, we are all connected through this tapestry of images and feelings. I love you all, and I am overjoyed whenever I find another "pea" to add to my "pod"! :D *big hugs and much love to my pod siblings* Augustine Birrell PC, KC (19 January 1850 – 20 November 1933) was an English politician, barrister, academic and author.
