The Painted Wall

27 Aug 2015 5 5 549
Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park, Colorado. The cliff here is roughly 2000 ft high (~610 m). The "paint" streaks are pegmatite dikes, traditionally interpreted as intruded into the dark host metamorphic rock from an outside reservoir, but which may instead have largely formed in place by partial melting ("anatexis.") Looking west and downstream from the south rim of the canyon.

Differential weathering

Another example. The "ribs" standing out are finer-grained and thus more resistant than the rest of the granite.

Breached southeast dike

26 Apr 2011 3 5 299
Quail Creek Dam, near St. George, Utah, USA. The southeast dike of the dam collapsed in the wee hours on New Year's Day, 1989, after being undermined due to gypsum in the country rock dissolving out. There were no injuries but a considerable amount of property damage. The dike has been rebuilt with a much better foundation.

Some "fangs"

19 Mar 2011 6 8 426
Probably volcanic necks. They are along Fang Ridge in the Reveille Range, Nye County, Nevada, USA, which probably defined an eruptive fissure.
