Lower Grand Canyon, Arizona, USA. As part of a US Geological Survey expedition in May, 1976. The blue flag on the boat has the USGS logo. So I got to do as part of my job what people _pay_ to do for fun ;) Lava Falls is the largest rapid in the Grand Canyon. It occurs toward the end of a river trip, in the lower canyon, so you have the feeling it's "hanging over your head" most of the trip!

On the Willamette River just off Interstate 205 in the suburbs of Portland, Oregon, USA. A barrier to navigation Back in the Day, it was bypassed by a canal in the latter 19th century. "Willamette" is pronounced "will-AM-et", btw.

Built as a CCC (Civilian Conservation Corps) project in the late 1930s. Now flooded by the newer dam just downstream. It's on the Owyhee River, which drains north into the Snake. This little sliver of extreme northern Nevada is thus in the Columbia River's drainage, not the Great Basin.

Downstream from Carson City, Nevada. The road (such as it is) follows the old right-of-way of the Virginia & Truckee railroad. This area was seething with mining activity a century-plus ago. The inset shows a view upstream in the same area.
