Château de Kerjean 2014 – Pillars of Justice

In the olden days a beam was layed on top of the pillars, so that criminals could be hanged. The Lord of the Château had the right to sit in judgement and to execute punishments. The castle dates from the 16th century. The last marquise, Suzanne Augustine de Coatanscour, was guillotined in 1794 by the French revolutionaries. After that, the castle fell into disrepair. Part of the castle was sold for its stone. In 1911 it was bought by the government and monument status was granted. The restoration was finished in 2005.
