Willem III & Willem II

01 Mar 2012 2 220
King Willem III of the Netherlands was also known as King Gorilla, although saying it at the time would have ended you up in jail. Zürich (CH) police has a file on him that he used to walk out onto his balcony of his Zürich home only dressed in his morning robe and that he exposed himself to people passing. King Willem II was our hero at Waterloo. He was one of the table guests of the Duke of Wellington at the yearly veteran's dinner in Apsley House. See also this picture of the young Willem II, then only the Prince of Orange. www.flickr.com/photos/govert1970/2206963319/

The money is on the street: 1 cent

The cent disappeared from circulation when I was young and in the last days, a shortage of these coins was common. The baker closest to my home issued little piece of paper worth 1 cent whenever they didn't have cent coins. Old Dutch coins on the road to the Geldmuseum (Money Museum).

The money is on the street: kwartje

The 25-cents coin is known as a kwartje. The kwartje was used in telephones and vending machines, so the expression "het kwartje is gevallen" (the quarter has dropped) came into being, meaning that some kind of understanding was achieved. Old Dutch coins on the road to the Geldmuseum (Money Museum).
