Tullio Lombardo, 15th century. Originally they were part of the funeral monument for the Doge Andrea Vendramin (1393–1478), but they were removed in the 19th century. The Vendramin monument is now in the Santi Giovanni e Paolo in Venice, seen below on the left.
The statues were damaged in a fire in 1945, but this are the photo's taken before the damage.

It was a gambling device. Four differently coloured balls would be entered at the top and the first one to arrive at the bottom would win the game. Chariot racing was very popular in Constantinople. There were four teams: the Blues (Veneti), the Greens (Prasini), the Reds (Russati), and the Whites (Albati).

This habit had developed in the Fayum Oasis by Roman soldiers who settled in Egypt. The portraits are from 60–250 AD.
