I went to see the Grebe family again today. Now this shot is technically not a good shot in that the bird, head included, is turned away from us; we can barely see its face. So, normally, this would get trashed. But it's the only shot I have with this incredible water, so I decided that the pose of the bird be damned but I have to share this. Isn't that water gorgeous?!
Processing was difficult though. I wanted to keep the colours just as soft and pastel as they were, but as I usually expose to the right of the histogram they did need toning down a bit, but that changed the colours too much, so I struggled a bit there. Please let me know if you think the water is too bright and needs darkening a bit still. On my calibrated monitor it looks good now, but I've stared at it for too long and I can't tell any more! :)
Uncropped.

I went to see the Grebe family today. Last week there were 2 chicks. Today there was just this one left. Hopefully he'll make it.
Taken late afternoon and again they let me get awfully close. This is uncropped.

Stumbled upon this family yesterday. They're actually old friends of mine as I followed them a few years ago. I think they still know who I am as they were very comfortable with me being very close. Usually these Grebes are very skittish and will run if you even look at them! :)
I'm also using them for this weeks POTN: World Wide Photo Week theme, which is "look what I found."

And then there turned out to be not one but two chicks.
The parent tried to feed the fish to the little one, but I think it was too big and after countless attempts, he ate it himself. :)

Three shots of a family of Great Crested Grebes. I have added notes here to show the other two.

This is one of a pair of Great Crested Grebes that reside in a canal not far from where I live. I followed the couple raise a family in 2010. Of three chicks only one made it to adulthood then. This week I went to see them again and I am delighted they are still there. They now have two chicks. One visible here in the image. While the other parent was busy fishing and providing for the little ones, this one was very sleepy... :)
