High tide. Cornish coast. Southwest Peninsula Coastpath. The footpaths in the grass opposite indicate that there are interesting ways down!

Samphire and Asparagus Islands from Carvannel Downs, South west Peninsula Coast Path. Taken 11 years ago and it seems like yesterday! I see this was taken on my first day back from my first year teaching in Madrid. It had been a tough but rewarding year and as there were no classes from June to early September (therefore no earnings), I went on the dole back in Cornwall. I wasn't able to pull that trick in following years, so this was the last (and come to think of it, first!) 3 month summer holiday I had!

There is an easy path down, seen here on the other side but from this angle it looks anything but easy!

Sea carrot, heather and gorse on the downs overlooking Samphire and Asparagus Islands and the cliffs of Northcliffs, Hell's Mouth, The Knavocks and Godrevy in the distance. Godrevy Isalnd and lighthouse can just be seen and the hills of West Penwith are on the horizon, about half way to Land's End. For Pam. On full screen please. Sight and sound, for no other reason that I like the song and the under-rated artist Sixto Rodriguez www.youtube.com/watch?v=xvFky0YcGAQ

This is taken from higher up than most of my Porthcadjack shots. Samphire and Asparagus Islands can be seen at the left with only their tops showing. Crane Islands are mid distance and the North Cliffs, Hell's Mouth and Godrevy coasts are further off. In the very far distance are the hills of West Penwith beyond St Ives and getting closer to Land's End. My mum did an oil painting from this shot and just last week, it won first prize in the St Day arts and crafts show, not just in the painting category but for the whole exhibition too. Yes, she is dead chuffed, and rightly so!

Porthcadjack - The South West Peninsula Coast Path

This is a note about 3 paths! The new-ish path is the stepped zig-zag one, an 80s creation and it helped to stabilise the much worn slopes here. The original path went straight up to the right of the zig-zag and is only faintly visible, not the one to the left, which is the creation of impatient recent walkers. Now that the original path has recovered from the severe erosion, I risk being naughty and sometimes take this direct path as I can't do any damage if I am the only walker who takes this route (for nostalgia's sake only, you understand!). When I was trying to get fit after giving up smoking, I used to run up the zig-zag path and then trot back down, and then do it again. My record was 6 times repeatedly and I got fit in no time! Then I moved to Spain, got a teaching job, walking in the hills became less and less frequent and I soon became unfit again! :o(

Straight ahead is the fun way!

Only the very tops of Samphire and Asparagus Islands can be seen from here. In the distance (L to R) Crane Islands, North Cliffs and Godrevy. In the very far distance, St Ives.

Asparagus, Samphire and Crane Islands from Carvannel Downs. Evidence of rapid coastal erosion is clear here. The slippages due to the angle of the rock strata are obvious. I was perhaps a little bit stupid to even be here!
