Winter Minimalism

This photo is of Kulshan Ridge, the ridge north of Mount Baker on which Artist's Point viewing area is located. The viewing area at this time was under ten to twelve feet of snow (3.5 meters). Taken in the morning, this was our destination since Mount Baker lies over the ridge.
Blowing Snow

This is another photo from our January 2 excursion on Snowshoes showing the blowing snow at the top of Kulshan Ridge, our destination. We stayed there only long enough for photos.
Camping at Huntoon Point

Huntoon Point marks the western end of Kulshan Ridge, a long ridge that runs from Mount Baker towards Mount Shuksan. Artist's Point is on the ridge also, near where we were standing when this photo was taken. That evening there were a number of campers up near Artist's Point and one group up on Huntoon Point, not a place I would camp if there was any wind, but that Saturday was a quiet, windless day and quite warm. Their tent and several of them are visible in the photo.

This was taken at Artist's Point near the Mount Baker Ski Resort while snowshoeing there with my wife. We watched the sunset from the viewpoint before heading back down for supper and other comforts.

A little wind, a lot of snow and some sunlight, none of which were provided by me. I just had the camera.
Windy and Cold

Snowshoeing to Artist's Point on January 2, this is what we found there. Artist's Point lies on Kulshan Ridge and there was a stiff wind blowing there with very cold temperatures. We stayed at the top only long enough for photos before heading back down.
Headed Up

This was not our group but another group of snowshoers who were following us and who were also headed up to Artist's Point. It's obvious from the photo that it was not very cold but that it was very foggy, though the day later cleared. The mountains in the background are some of the peaks just south of the Canadian border and the trail at this point, such as it was, had flattened out.

Only a few more including this one of Mount Baker from Kulshan Ridge somewhere near Artist's Point which is buried in the snow and hard to identify.

Another photo from our December trek to Kulshan Ridge and Artist's Point when the mist was still heavy and the sun was trying to break through.
Snowboarder and Shuksan

There had actually been two of them but one took off down the ridge just before I took the picture. People often go on showshoes or skis to the top of the ridge and then ski or board down. It's a favorite place for backcountry skiing though right now there is considerable danger of avalanches in some areas with one person killed and another injured recently on the north slope of Mount Herman. The mountain in the background of this photo is Shuksan.

As is usually the case the snow was heaviest at the top of Kulshan Ridge and the snowfall of the night before, combined with a windless day, produced these remarkable snow-covered trees. They are very beautiful when snow-covered but can also be deadly. Snow this deep (15 feet) can produce areas of loose snow around the trunk of a tree called a "tree well." These tree wells are very dangerous and people who do fall into them often die before they can be rescued or disappear and die if they are alone.

We were headed back down and the clouds were moving in when this was taken looking back to Kulshan Ridge on which Artist's Point lies. When snowshoeing along Kulshan Ridge it is possible to go as far as Huntoon Point on the left of the photo though we did not do so.
