Photographed along the Denali Highway as we traveled from Denali National Park to Glenallen. There was a lot of smoke from wildfires in the area of Denali at the time and that affected all our photos.

The Denali Highway connects the towns of Cantwell and Paxson, running east and west from Denali National Park to the Fairbanks-Valdez Highway. It is 135 miles of gravel road and very lightly traveled but all the more enjoyable for that. We traveled the highway one morning in 2015 when we were in Alaska.

This was taken early in the morning along the Denali Highway and I believe the river is the Nenana. We traveled the 135 miles of the Denali Highway from west to east, from Cantwell to Paxson, and saw only one other vehicle on the road.. The Denali Highway is unpaved for most of its length and was originally built to provide access to Denali National Park. It is little used now that the Parks Highway is open. The Nenana forms the eastern boundary of Denali National Park.

We left Denali National Park in the evening, drove south to Cantwell, slept a few hours and then drove east on the Denali Highway starting very early in the morning. The Denali Highway is 135 miles of mostly gravel road running east and west between Cantwell and the ghost town of Paxson. It was originally built to provide access to Denali, but the Parks Highway has replaced it and the Denali Highway is little traveled now. We drove most of the distance without seeing another vehicle, but thought it one of the highlights of our Alaska trip. This was taken at one of first stops at a lake whose name I never discovered and cannot find now and looks south to the Talkeetna Range. There are many more pictures of this wonderful drive at the link below.

After leaving Denali National Park, we drove the Denali Highway east to Paxson. In spite of its name, the Denali Highway is a narrow gravel road for most of its length, nearly 135 miles. We saw only one other vehicle the whole length of the road and some wonderful scenery, stopping often for photos.
