Clear Lake

Last spring we purchased two kayaks and have been using them on our lake, Clear Lake. These are phone photos taken at the north end of the lake while we were out kaykaing (I didn't dare take my camera). The north end of the lake is bounded by steep basalt cliffs as are many of the other lakes in our area, and the lake was also very low last summer.

These photos, all taken with my phone, were from our kayaking adventure on the Rio Grande. We paddled up river about three miles and then floated back down. I did not dare take my camera so used my phone instead which I kept in a waterproof bag. We capsized once at the beginning of the excursion, so that was a wise decision.

We kayaked about three miles into the Santa Elena Canyon in Big Bend National Park and then boomeranged back to our put-in location. These were some of the cliffs lining the river.

After hiking into Santa Elena Canyon, the entrance to which is visible on the left of the photo, we drove downriver a short distance and put our kayak in and kayaked up the river and back into the canyon. To our surprise the river was so shallow in places that we had to carry the kayak. We should have put it in right at the entrance to the canyon and not further down, but we made it back to the canyon and spent much of the rest of the day in the canyon and on the river. The photos were all taken with my phone which I kept in a waterproof bag when I was not using it. I did not dare take my camera in the kayak and soon found out that it was a good thing I did not since we capsized once in very shallow water but deep enough to have damaged my camera,

At this point in our excursion by Kayak up the Rio Grande we were still quite a ways from the entrance to the canyon and mostly carrying the kayak because the river was so shallow. Even in the canyon there were a few places where we had to carry the kayak.

This photo was taken in Mexico on the shore of the Rio Grande. It shows the entrance to the Santa Elena Canyon, our destination on this kayaking venture. The sheer flat wall is the American side of the canyon and the cliffs on the left are in Chihuahua, Mexico.

This was the Rio Grande near where we launched our kayak headed for the sheer cliff in the middle of the photo. The cliff is one side of Santa Elena Canyon where we spent most of the day kayaking.
