Another tree often found growing with the Redwoods is Big Leaf Maple, one of the iconic trees of the Pacific Northwest. This Big Leaf Maple foliage was photographed along the trail to Stout Grove in Jedediah Smith State Park.

Geum macrophyllum, the Large-leaved Avens, grows across Canada and throughout the western and northern USA. This example was photographed along the Harding Icefields trail near Exit Glacier in Kenai Fjords National Park.

Taken in Lake Padden Park on a spring hike, these are the emerging flowers of one of our distinctive native trees, the Big-leaf Maple, Acer macrophyllum.

Autumn Color

No, the colors are not changing here yet. This was taken last October in Wallace Falls State Park while we were hiking there. The yellow leaf is the leaf of one of our native hardwoods, the Bigleaf Maple, Acer macrophyllum and the spots are caused by a fungus very common on the leaves of these trees, the Tar Spot Fungus, Rhytisma punctatum.
