Australian White Ibis

The first time we saw one of these birds we were impressed. After seeing them everywhere we were less impressed. Words used to describe them are "pests" and "nuisances" and apparently they are like a large version of the starling here, though unlike our starlings they are native. This one was photographed at the Brisbane Botanical Gardens.

I believe this is the sap of the Pink Bloodwood tree, a native Australian tree. We photographed it at the Brisbane Koala Bushlands.

Photographed along the trails in the Brisbane Koala Bushlands, this is a common bird in eastern Australia, the Noisy Miner, Manorina melanocephala. This one, however, was not living up to its name, though others we saw certainly were.
Broad-leaf Paperbark

Also known as the Paperbark Tea Tree, this small tree is an important food source for native insects, bats and birds. Its current botanical name is Melaleuca quinquenervia, but it is better known as Callistemon quinquenervia. It has been introduced into southern Florida where it is considered a noxious weed and "one of the most serious threats to the integrity of the native ecosystem".

On the same day that some of the family members were in downtown Brisbane my wife and I visited the Brisbane Koala Bushlands, a natural area south of Brisbane. We hoped to see Koalas there but only saw their markings on the trees. We did have a pleasant walk and saw a number of new birds and enjoyed the native flora.

Captured in a friend's backyard in the western suburbs of Brisbane. We saw them many times, but were not always able to get photos.
Brisbane from Mount Coot-Tha

Mount Coot-tha is in the west suburbs of Brisbane and is a wonderful vantage point from which to see the city. We were several times to the lookout and cafe at the top of the mount and several times to the Brisbane Botanical Garden on the slopes of Mount Coot-tha. Brisbane was the focus of our trip to Australia because it was there our youngest son was married. His new wife is from Brisbane but has moved with him to the USA.
