Amargosa Sand Dunes

Traveling from Death Valley to Ash Meadows Wildlife Refuge we saw these sand dunes in the distance, but our information warned us of the danger of getting stuck without a four-wheel drive vehicle, so we had to be content to view them from a distance.

The Trail to Lake Serene

Lake Serene

Lake Serene is a small alpine lake lying at the foot of Mount Index in the Cascades. It is a very popular hike, though a fairly steep trail and a bit over seven miles round trip. We hiked there with the Washington Native Orchid Society looking for a rare orchid, but the hike is worthwhile for its own sake. This was our first view of the lake with the steep sides of Mount Index looming above the lake. There is also a side trail to some beautiful falls, but for lack of time we did not visit the falls. Instead we made our way around the lake as far as we could go, though the trees and across the scree and snow in the picture to the other side. The photo below is from an earlier hike to the lake when the day was not as sunny and beautiful as this. The lake is on the west side of the Cascades near the town of Goldbar and off Highway 2.

If I remember, this was taken north of Quincy, Washington, but it really could have been taken almost anywhere in eastern Washington.

Slemish

In Explore September 23, 2009, #407. "Slemish (Irish, Sliabh Mis) is the remains of the plug of an extinct volcano near Ballymena, County Antrim, Northern Ireland Its distinctive appearance—its upper reaches are very steep and rugged, in contrast to the tidy fields on its lower westward-facing slopes and the relatively flat bogland to the east—causes it to dominate the landscape for miles in all directions. Tradition holds that Saint Patrick, enslaved as a youth, was brought to this area and tended herds on Slemish, and that during this time he found God. (However, another theory contends that he spent this period in the west of Ireland...) In later times, it was the site of a United Irish camp during the 1798 rebellion in County Antrim." - Wikipedia

The volcanic plug where Saint Patrick is reputed to have herded sheep when a slave-boy in Ireland, Slemish stands above the surrounding countryside and is a landmark visible for many miles.

In Explore December 10, 2009, #303. No one should come to Washington State without visiting Olympic National Park. It is one of the most beautiful and unspoiled areas of our country.
