In the deep mid-winter

Winter, though mostly cold and dark can be an exciting time. Here is a wonderful misty mood shot form my local valley, unfortunately maybe, also accompanied by this cruel barbed fence.

Have a good weekend.

As the first real signs of winter catches up to us here in Oldham, I am tempted out for a quick walk in my local environment. Here is a path alongside a new school that I have walked to and from on many occasions. Today a heavy frost is present in temperature just below zero but the clear sky and sun makes it all quite wonderful.

Have a good weekend.

Another capture from my walk a couple of days back in the cold frost. The ‘pulpit’ is in fact an information board displaying pictures and maps of the valley as it was many years back. – I just enjoyed the light here with the frozen trees.
Nice full screen, enjoy the day.

As the cold spell continues here, I take another opportunity to capture the winter feeling. Not many people in this local valley but some dog walkers and a lone chap with his camera and small rucksack!
Enjoy the light and pleasure of such walks in full screen.

As the winter cold continues, here is a capture from a day or so back, again along my old school walk valley. A very cold morning of about minus three degrees. The footbridge over the River Medlock here was until a year or so back over from where that stone block is but it was replaced and moved after it became dangerous. This river was for almost a hundred years one of our most polluted in the area having out spill from many old mills, factories, refuse tips and sewers along its route. Fortunately now it is far cleaner. Last year for the first time in my life I even saw large fish in here (Perch ?).

A frosty hazy morning brings me here.
Not a soul in sight, no-one near
A mono touch, is the way I see
To share this scene to you from me

Lone tree in the mist

A lone tree stands in the mist as dog walkers pass by. After our winter snow snap we get some mist which makes quite a different kind of picture. This taken in one of my local valleys.

A favourite walk not far from my home here in Oldham, this area always looks nice in these conditions and lighting like this. The river today is very high after weeks of heavy rain. This morning we have some snow instead.
Enjoy large.

The Samaria Gorge, Crete

The entrance of the 18km long Samaria Gorge taken from Xyloskalo on the Omalos plateau. In the distance you can see the high peaks of the White Mountains. The plateau is particularly beautiful in the winter, when it is frequently covered by snow. Just out of shot, a slow line of back-packers make there way down the torturous path to start there long hike which is very hot and dry without any refreshment stops, each showing a special pass to guarding wardens.
In the past, the plateau of Omalos was the shelter of the locals and the base of rebels during the two and a half centuries of the Turkish occupation, but also during all other wars against invaders.
