The beautiful Robin

A country walk near our Piethorn reservoir brings this friendly chap and me together. As it sat on this wall I thought it was watching me intently but then it suddenly shot behind me to grab a big juicy worm. As I whistled to it, it happily whistled back as though having a conversation. After a little while it was joined by its mate. See PiP Erithacus rubecula. The Robin, UK's favourite bird - with its bright red breast it is familiar throughout the year and especially at Christmas! Males and females look identical, and young birds have no red breast and are spotted with golden brown. Robins sing nearly all year round and despite their cute appearance, they are aggressively territorial and are quick to drive away intruders. Enjoy full screen

Peep! I see you!

The ‘Christmas’ Robin comes out to greet us here in the natural countryside. It’s very cold and so we see it almost as a ball here. In this sort of weather the robin, like many small birds, plump up their feathers to keep warm air in and retain more of its heat around its small body. PiPs shows our house robins. Enjoy full screen.

Re yesterdays photo: Is it a Wren or a Robin?

Yesterday I posted two views of this bird which raised the question as to what breed it was. One or two of you asked in which way were the tail feathers pointing? Up for a wren, down for a Robin. I think this answers the question.

Who’s a pretty birdie then?

Seen on a fence whilst on my local walks. Not sure if it is a young sparrow, or wren. I am pretty sure it was waiting here for its parents to bring it back some food. See PiP for alternative view. Enjoy full size. Have a great weekend. Herb

Our robin takes notice before he drinks.

Another shot in our garden to the bird bath within our dry-fountain. In practice, we have two robins here in the garden and I believe this one has a nest within the ivy, honysuckle and clematis trellis, shared with a blackbirds nest too. Technically this is a 'European Robin' with the scientific name: Erithacus rubecula Nice full screen
