A question. Should the contribution be taken on official photography day, August 19th?

I think that is something to consider for next year. Especially since we are beginning on the 19th itself (and most people are already on the 20th).

We should think about if we want a snapshot of a day, or a personally special photo, or something else.

At least within a narrow time frame. Otherwise, it'll just be an extra collection of "best of".

I personally think people should try to get the photo taken on August 19th. Then edit and "develop" it, and upload it as soon as possible.

However, as a start for this year, I do as Bernhard, and upload one that I took on August 18th.

We have two different ideas here, I see three possibilities:

One - Photos taken on the day (August 19th) or within a few days (because I don't like being strict about almost anything - there are always extenuating circumstances), and posted within a couple weeks (allowing for film processing and other things).
- This would be a type of Snapshot sort of group.

Two - Photos taken anytime that the photographer chooses as expressing their connection to photography, literally or abstractly. Maybe taken anytime within the last year.
- Strongly encourage a comment or description that lets the viewer know why the particular photograph is being included.
- This would be a group of not just 'best of', but of things of value or connections with the world of photography and perhaps would encourage discussion around our world of photography.

Three - Photos from the year that they feel represents them as a photographer. Could be either what they think is their best photo, or their most important, or showing off their equipment, or something like that.
- This would be similar to idea Two, but looser and without the interaction element. Closer to the concept of "Best of".

I am inclined towards the second one. It would require me being proactive - asking for reasons they've chosen their photos (if they haven't included one), engaging with people over their reasons. More of a club type activity.
That said, I am totally on board if we want to make it a 'snapshot of the day'. I could start a different group for my Two idea if it doesn't really fit the more official 'World Photography Day' concept.

And I would go with the first. Then we share ideas on calendar tools over the group, to remember become active next year. If possible, the discussions should be open always, to allow planning.

Then for example planning the topic could start a week or two in advance.

There are RSS tools to make sure the members get notified when there are some new comments on group discussions.

Do you happen to know what the original World Photography Day concept was? Was it a snapshot type of thing? I don't know its history.

I manage to find this:
economictimes.indiatimes.com/magazines/panache/why-august-19-is-observed-as-world-photography-day/articleshow/53688266.cms

I recall participating to one of those global online galleries, probably not on 2010, but a year or two after. I recall it was on some Swedish server at that time. But I can't find it anymore.

That is a nice article. I feel it gave enough information that we could use. I like:
----------------------------------
August 19 is observed as World Photography Day, which aims to inspire photographers across the planet
TO SHARE A SINGLE PHOTO WITH A SIMPLE PURPOSE: TO SHARE THEIR WORLD WITH THE WORLD.
World Photo Day originates from the invention of the Daguerreotype, a photographic process developed by Frenchmen Louis Daguerre and Joseph Nicephore Niepce in 1837.
On January 9, 1839, the French Academy of Sciences announced the Daguerreotype process.
On August 19, the French government purchased the patent and announced the invention as a gift “free to the world”.
----------------------------------
I had been thinking recently of figuring out how to give an incentive for people to become club members for longer than 1 year. My original thought had been to give a free 8x10 print (or comparable) of a photograph to anyone who signed up for 3 years. Notice I say free here. Free is the most persuasive word in advertising. I don't really want to advertise ipernity, I want to spread the word about ipernity because we only want people here who really want to be members of our club. But still I think something like a free photographic print might be nice since is it realated to what we do.

Then I tried to think about what photo that would be. Now this idea of the World Photography Day origins coming from sharing photos for free, that photography was to be a "free to the world" gift plays into this idea.

Maybe we could promote the group for a couple months before the day with the idea of sharing a photo with the world, and ask when they post thier photo, if they want it to be in the pool of photos for people to pick from for a free print when they become members, or renew membership for a 3 year commitment. It's in the spirit of the day.

The photo itself would then not have to be one taken on August 19th, though it could be (still allowing for contributions for a couple weeks after), but instead is some photo that somehow "shares their world, with the world". It would be nice if people included a description with their photo - the place, the idea, the thought - but I wouldn't want to enforce that, only request it.

I KNOW, I kNOW! This is a large commitment of time for someone or a few people (not for you to do, Bernhard!!) , and a certain amount of expense. There's how the photos get printed and the shipping (there are lots of businesses that do this for photographers - I could research who has world wide shipping). These things could be figured out. We have time!!

Of course, my photo for long term member sign up doesn't have to be tied to World Photography Day group. I just thought it was interesting that it seems to go with it so well. And kind of appropriate that it comes from the patent being bought in France. I had known that, but didn't know how it played in to World Photography Day. And no one would have to be part of the free photo, they would just have the option to be one of the choices.

There, I've put the idea out into the world. Thoughts?

Good idea, Laura, I think. We can consider covering the costs together.

Some moreideas...

If we plan to have some topic, I suggest it could be something related to photography:

- auto portrait of a photographer (selfie)
- camera set on tripod and seen in the context (street, landscape, studio)
- darkroom
- someone else taking a photo in context (permission should be asked to share the image online)
- photography gear and/or prints set out for a still life (not sure about copyright though)

Anyway, these could be indeed only suggestions. So, World Photography Day could be about photography ;-)

I would be happy to share in the costs of doing the free print for 3 year membership sign up.

I like your topic ideas, but I'm not so sure I want to have that tied to World Photography Day. My impression is that groups share their part of the world on World Photography Day and I kind of like the open endedness of that. My world could be a corner of my study, could be my cameras and setup, could be my city or the woods I wander in, or my state of mind (lord help us - ha!).

Maybe we could give examples of topics? (With photo examples?)

So much time has passed. And now we are about 2 weeks away from World Photography Day.

I would like to "keep it simple, stupid" - and go with #1, as you, Sami, thought [see top of this discussion].

All the other ideas can come as we go.

I am going to ask Bernhard if we can post this group to Club News.

Keeping it to 1 photo per person.

I think it should be on the 19th with an allowance of a few days before the actual day could be impossible for some people for whatever reason, the photo should also be local to where they live, most people would agree global warming is a problem so ipernity's contribution to the day should not promote jetting half way round the world to take a few photos.
If it is decided it is to be in the last year it should be a photo that has not previously been posted on ipernity thus avoiding those with lots of starts and comments from lot's of groups

Happily this is what we have decided for this year. The photo needs to be taken on the 19th (with allowance for minor variation - mostly for time zone differences.

Uploading can happen anytime until the end of August.

I will be checking the contributed photos for the 'taken' date.

I agree, a new photo taken on the day should be the aim.

Yes, and that is what we are doing this year.

Perhaps another year we will choose something different, but that would require probably a couple months notice.

I'm excited to see what people contribute.

I don't like to be fixed on a day with a new photo !!! I take photos according to my mood and my mood, which is always the same, the weather also plays a big role for me. why shouldn't photos be taken that contain a period of time? I am also often in a quandary with the Saturday and Sunday groups. Should I take a picture for better or for worse and I do not succeed or it does not correspond to my pretense at all? I then have exactly older photos, which could possibly correspond to the topic to the point.
But I see I am completely alone with this opinion.
And so - I think - it will happen again on 08/19/2021 ...

No, I am completely with you. I would have liked to contribute with this one for example, taken a few days ago...Phoenicopterus roseus, Flamingos, Castro Marim, Dawn poetry, that would suit my mood. Tomorrow is not a good day for me, and even with some time flexibility it is hard to take a photo "on demand"... will see what I can do, or not...

I have replied to this in the discussion called Question. Sorry to not get to this earlier, I've been working hard trying to get the word out.

Short answer: please don't worry about taking a "great" photo. Please feel connected tobour community by doing something together with evetyone on the same day. [suggestions and more in my answer to Annaig56's question discussion)

Very happy to have a discission for how to do an all ipernity activity next year.

I hope we can all relax about quality and try to feel connected on the 19th and share that with each other.

You can also upload the picture you take today and upload to ipernity to the Official World Photography Day page. What for? By linking it back to your ipernity account, you are indirectly drawing attention to ipernity, a kind of promotion for our community.
